Canada Launches New National AI Literacy Program

Students and teachers, and all Canadians, can take advantage of free courses focused on using AI.

Canada's new AI literacy initiative is taking shape, with the goal of helping students, parents, and teachers understand and use AI (artificial intelligence) tools effectively and responsibly.

Here's what we can expect, based on the recent government announcement.

Canada's National AI Literacy Initiative

The new program is a partnership between the federal government and the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii). It offers free lessons and learning opportunities focused on real-world AI usage, ensuring Canadians are ready for the world of tomorrow.

Three streams and three stages

The new AI for All literacy initiative is delivered under three streams:

• AI for All: Essentials for Students
• AI for All: Essentials for Educators
• AI for All: Essentials for Canadians

No matter who you are, you're invited to learn! The federal government expects to "reach up to one million post-secondary students and more than 50,000 kindergarten-to-Grade-12 (K-12) educators" through this program.

Essentials for Students

Post-secondary schools that participate can offer their students a free three-hour AI literacy course that helps students use AI effectively while developing foundational AI knowledge and skills.

Schools can get started as early as Monday, September 21, 2026, so keep an eye on your student email for info on this program!

Essentials for Teachers

Aimed at K-12 educators across the country, this program includes classroom-ready resources and will roll out in stages through the fall semester. This program includes practical advice and guidance for teaching students all about AI.

Essentials for Canadians

Coming later this year, the Essentials for Canadians program will launch in conjunction with multiple community partners. Local organizations will offer the course and solicit feedback from community members, with a goal of offering open access to training for all Canadians.

Understand, use, and build

The three stages of instruction for this program are simple:

• Understand AI tools and concepts
• Use AI tools appropriately and effectively
• Build with AI tools, for those who are interested

"Understand AI" and "use AI" both apply to everyone — all students, teachers, and Canadians will need a basic grasp of the technology in the coming years — while "build with AI" applies only to those who are enthusiastic about the technology and want to take it further.

Even if you're skeptical about AI, you're sure to learn a lot about assessing AI-generated information, recognizing potential risks of the technology, and using the tech in productive, confident, responsible ways.

Students in post-secondary should soon hear from their schools on how to take part in the training, while teachers will be contacted by school boards. Parents and other Canadians will hear more about these programs from local community groups in the coming weeks and months.
