Top 5 TikTok Trends and Communities from 2021

TikTok has risen in popularity since Covid as everyone turned to the internet for comfort, unique content, and ways to pass the time. This app has truly shown how something can go viral overnight, and even more so, what viral trends last longer than the typical fleeting moment.

As 2021 wraps up, let’s recap some trends, sounds, and communities that went viral over the year including some old favourites, and some new interests.

1. Bones Day

The best thing to come out of Tik Tok this past year has been Jonathan Graziano’s adorable 13-year-old pug, Noodle, that forecasts the type of day we’re going to have. These predictions occur every day, first thing in the morning and are determined by whether Noodle stays standing or if he flops back into his cozy bed. When Noodle stands, it’s a bones day; a day to accomplish all of your goals, take risks, and seize the day! If Noodle falls back into his bed, it’s a no bones day; a day to get cozy, do something for yourself, and relax. Noodle and his owner Jonathan now have 4.6 million followers and #NoBones is trending with 850.2 million videos attached to the hashtag. Check out some of Noodle’s predictions.

2. Feta Pasta

This food trend began early in 2021 and took the world by storm. Across grocery stores everywhere, feta cheese became a hot commodity and sold out quickly. This is an easy recipe to make and requires very little preparation. All the recipe calls for is tossing a block of feta cheese, cherry tomatoes, and spices in the oven as the pasta of your choice cooks, and then mixing it all together. This simple dish is so delicious, it’s no wonder why it has been added to everyone’s cooking repertoire and is still being made even as the year comes to an end. Learn how to make feta pasta.

3. Gua Sha

Everyone wants that sharp jawline and defined cheeks and the art of Gua Sha has helped so many achieve their goals. Rooted in Chinese history, Gua Sha isn’t simply a sculpting tool, but it actually has holistic benefits as it drains the lymph nodes in your face, relaxes your muscles, and provides a calming effect on your mentality. However, there is a proper way to apply this practice, and Mount Lai, a company that rose to power on TikTok provides their customers with key learnings with their quality products. 4. BookTok

#BookTok is a community where people can go to find new book recommendations, browse others’ gorgeous bookshelf setups, discover tools to help organize your books, and products that heighten your reading experience. Whether you’re just starting your book exploration or you’re a seasoned reader, #BookTok has something for you. This community’s popularity has risen to the point where large companies like Indigo have created new sections in their stores based entirely on books that became popular on TikTok. #BookTok is a top trend with over 30.3 billion views. 5. Face off – Dwayne Johnson

We’ve talked about top trending hashtags, communities, products, and food, but now let’s talk about one of the top trending sounds of 2021. Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock) collaborated with Tech N9ne where he wrote and rapped his own verse in the song. Since its release, the verse has taken over TikTok as it has 1.3 million videos using the sound. People film themselves using the song to hype them up and motivate them in exercise routines. But of course, TikTok doesn’t simply take the song at face value. The lyrics have been used and adapted for humour. People have used the lyrics to say a prayer at their family dinner, and it’s even been mashed up with the song “You’re Welcome” from Disney’s Moana. Watch some videos using The Rock’s rap.
