The Canadian federal election is coming up, and the next Prime Minister will be decided by the nation's youth. If you're between 18 and 34, you make up the country's largest voting bloc, and the different parties may win or lose depending on your demographic... as long as you vote!

We hear so much talk about "having a civic duty to vote," but what does that really mean? In today's world, there seems to be so much going on — you can't even scroll through social media without seeing stories that make you feel like the world is in turmoil.

Global warming protests, rising student debt and rent reaching all-time highs can be overwhelming and make you feel as though you have no say. There's no two ways about it: the world of politics can be confusing — but don't let that prevent you from voicing your opinion on the national stage.

Every vote counts. On October 21, 2019, make a statement and stand up for your beliefs by voting. Take time to read up on what the different parties are saying and make your voice heard. If you're not up on all of the latest news and politics, that's okay — you can figure out where you stand on big issues using the Vote Compass quiz, and you can compare the different party platforms at Canada Votes.

Here are 3 big reasons why you need to get out and vote this election season:

1. The Issues Affect You

Whether it's the environment or taxes, there are issues that affect you. Whoever's elected will have a direct impact on how funds are allocated for international aid, the fight against climate change, and many other pressing concerns.

2. Don't Let Different Generations Decide For You

Older generations are more likely to vote, meaning that in the past your fate has been in the hands of people who grew up in a different time, and may have contrasting values to your own. If you make your voice heard, the youth vote could be the deciding factor.

3. Because You Care

There are so many places around the world where democracy is not as secure as ours, so use your right to vote to its full extent. A healthy society is one that actively votes on a regular basis. If everyone stands up together for what they individually believe in, Canadian politics, and the world as a whole, has the capacity to change for the better.

Now get out and vote!
