Finding the Right Fit: Choosing a Program in Four Steps

Choosing a program can be a tough task and it’s totally normal to feel a bit anxious; that’s why we’re here to help. Algonquin College offers a long list of programs to choose from, but we’ll help you narrow it down in just four steps.

Step 1: Use free resources available to AC applicants

Check out what resources are available to you:

AC Hub

Check out the AC Hub and meet with a Student Navigator who can answer your questions and help you figure out which program would best meet your needs. These on-site experts have a wealth of knowledge and experience to share.

Book a tour

Sometimes Visiting the campus in person and seeing what AC has to offer helps seal the deal. From the awesome robotics labs to the in-house advertising agency, there are so many cool things to look at and ask questions about during your visit. Can’t make it in person? We’ve got a virtual option, too.

Our website

It might sound obvious, but our website has tons of useful information that can help you make up your mind. Spanning full lists of programs with breakdowns of each one, student spotlights, and more, you’ll likely find everything you’re looking for online.

Step 2: Figure out your likes

Mark Twain once said, “Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life,” and we certainly think that applies here. When choosing a program, it’s important to consider your hobbies, interests, favourite subjects, skills, and plans for the future. If you choose a program you’re passionate about, you’ll enjoy your time at AC and set yourself up for a happy and successful career down the road.

If you’re a creative person with a passion for cartoons or video games, you might find yourself drawn to the Animation or Game-Development programs. Maybe you’re really into woodworking? You might like the Cabinetmaking and Furniture Technician program. You get the picture. With so many programs to choose from, there’s something for you out there.

Step 3: Prioritize

What is the most important thing to you? There may be certain aspects of a program that could be more or less appealing and it’s super important to keep this in mind when making your final decision.

What does your list of “must-haves” look like? Maybe math is a total deal-breaker or a co-op placement is an absolute must. It might help to write your wish list down before doing your research so you can use it as a checklist.

Step 4: Prepare for the adventure!

Choosing a program is a lot like embarking on a new adventure! Think of it as starting a quest in uncharted lands with new ground to cover, surprises at every turn, and shiny buried treasure at the end (or crisp diploma, in this case). Whatever choice you make, we know you’ll do great!
