Why Choose Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU)?
What to expect from a hands-on university experience in metro Vancouver.
Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) is built around a simple idea: where thought meets action. If you're thinking about university after high school, that means learning that goes beyond lectures and textbooks. As Canada's only polytechnic university, KPU focuses on helping students understand ideas and apply them in real-world situations.
In many programs, you'll take part in group projects, presentations, and discussions with guest speakers. Some programs also include co-op placements, practicums, or other work experience options. These opportunities can help you see how your learning connects to actual careers. KPU also offers study abroad, exchanges, and field schools, along with programs shaped by input from industry partners to reflect current workplace expectations.

A university built for learning and connection
KPU has been part of communities south of the Fraser River since 1981 and became a polytechnic university in 2008. Today, it serves more than 20,000 students each year, with a large alumni network across Canada and around the world.
One of the biggest differences you might notice is the classroom experience. Classes are capped at 35 students, which can make it easier to ask questions, share ideas, and get to know your instructors. Faculty members bring real-world experience into their teaching, and classes often include input from industry professionals and guest speakers. The goal is a learning environment where you're actively involved, not just listening.
Flexible pathways and standout programs
KPU offers more than 140 programs across degrees, diplomas, and certificates, along with foundation and apprenticeship training. Some programs are especially unique. For example, KPU offers fashion and product design programs that are unique in Western Canada, a brewing diploma recognized by the Master Brewers Association, and an urban ecosystems degree that is the only one of its kind at the undergraduate level in North America. It also offers tuition-free English language upgrading and newer study options such as medicinal chemistry and Indigenous community justice.
Flexibility is a big part of the experience. Many students choose between full-time and part-time study, with classes offered in the morning, afternoon, or evening. Some online courses are available as well. You can also take part in work or volunteer opportunities on campus, or join one of many student clubs and organizations.
Support, campus life, and career preparation
Starting university can be a big change, and KPU offers a range of supports to help you adjust. There are more than 30 student services, including academic advising, career guidance, and help choosing a program or planning your courses. Learning Centres on each campus provide tutoring, study resources, and workshops. Indigenous students have access to dedicated supports, including Elder in Residence Lekeyten from the Kwantlen First Nation.
KPU also offers financial support, including scholarships, awards, and bursaries for both new and continuing students. Across five campuses in Metro Vancouver—Surrey, Langley, Cloverdale, Richmond, and Civic Plaza—you'll find modern labs, studios, classrooms, and student spaces, along with fitness facilities and Multi-Faith and Sacred Spaces. A free intercampus shuttle connects several locations.
Many programs are designed to help you build experience before you graduate. Co-op options, practicums, and work-integrated learning can give you a chance to apply what you've learned in real settings. Career Services can also help you find part-time work, summer jobs, and opportunities after graduation.
If you're looking for a university experience that combines hands-on learning, flexibility, and strong support systems, KPU is one option worth exploring as you plan your next step after high school.
