Why Choose Sheridan? Your Quick Intro to the S-Sense Program
A college education provides both academics and personal development. S-Sense is just one of the many ways Sheridan can help support you.
Choosing the right college is a huge part of building the future you want! Still, the world's moving faster than ever, with technological and cultural changes making headlines every day. So, students have to learn the material in their classes, sure, but they also need to be able to navigate change, complexity, and uncertainty — all of which are in wide supply in the 21st century!
Getting a college education is about more than academics (though your studies are important, of course!). Going to college helps build your personal skills, too: stuff like interacting with others, problem analysis and solving, and time management are all key parts of the post-secondary student experience.
At Sheridan, we offer S-Sense: a program designed to help you become more resilient, confident, and adaptable, no matter what school (or life!) throws at you. S-Sense is built from the ground up to support your personal development.
S-Sense at Sheridan
S-Sense is a self-paced, online learning platform comprised of four elements, each of which is an important part of becoming a well-rounded student, worker, and person! S-Sense is available to students from enrolment right through graduation, so it's here for you when you need it. You can complete the S-Sense program at your own pace, using it to build academic and career-related skills that will look great on your resumé. Check out the basics in this short YouTube video:
Think
Thinking critically and carefully is crucial to life-long success. Welcoming new perspectives, recognizing your biases, and challenging your own assumptions and beliefs can be difficult, so learning how to think flexibly will help you throughout your life and career.
Relate
Relating to others — and to yourself — means understanding your emotions, while empathizing and connecting with folks who have different backgrounds and experiences. Having strong skills in relationships also means giving and receiving constructive, empowering feedback!
Innovate
Innovation is at the heart of everything we do at Sheridan. Coming up with new ideas and improvements, while taking educated risks, and learning to fail, then get right back up and move forward, lets you uncover solutions in unexpected areas, and remain open to novel approaches.
Evolve
The three key skills above, thinking, relating, and innovating, coalesce into an ongoing evolution of your personal and academic skills! You'll learn to reflect on your experiences and emotions, and be ready to face your future with strength and confidence!
"When faced with complexity and uncertainty, S-Sense practices help us see ourselves, others, and the situation in more expansive ways," says Dr. Cherie Werhun, AVP of Human Development and Potential at Sheridan. By opening ourselves up to new ways of thinking, relating, and innovating, we "discover new parts of ourselves, our capcities, and ultimately, our potential."
Inspiring! If you're ready to develop your ideas, and chase down your goals, S-Sense at Sheridan can help.
