The Secret to Graduating Career-Ready in Health Sciences
Kickstart your health career in Canada or abroad.
Dreaming of becoming a doctor, speech pathologist, pharmacist, or a different health professional?
Turning that dream into a career takes more than just book smarts – you need real-world experience and hands-on learning to build the skills patients require and employers value. At Curtin University in Western Australia, we're committed to helping you build those skills right from the start of your studies.
In fact, according to the latest national QILT Employer Satisfaction Survey, Curtin graduates have been rated the best in the country for employer satisfaction – proof that our students graduate with the real-world skills that employers value most.
In this article, we'll explore why hands-on learning is essential in health sciences – and how Curtin sets you up for success through clinical placements, global experiences, simulation training and more.
Why are fieldwork experiences important in health sciences?
Fieldwork refers to practical, hands-on learning experiences outside the traditional classroom setting – it's a cornerstone of learning in many Curtin degrees. In various health sciences courses, fieldwork is a chance to gain critical clinical skills before you graduate. You'll experience real-world environments, including hospitals, community health services, private clinics and aged care.
Fieldwork is also an opportunity to learn from industry professionals, community role models, clients, patients and caregivers.
Importantly, many of your fieldwork activities will be aligned closely with course requirements set by accrediting bodies. As a Canadian student studying abroad, fieldwork can put you in a great position for taking the first steps in your professional career.
(Please note, accreditation requirements vary nationally and globally — read the study page of your preferred course for detailed information about qualifications and accreditations. To receive tailored information about using your Curtin degree globally, get in touch.)
3 hands-on learning experiences that will kickstart your health career
1. Practical placements
Placements are short-term opportunities to apply your knowledge and skills in real professional settings. During placements, you'll engage with people from diverse backgrounds, including experienced health professionals.
These experiences are a chance to bridge the gap between what you learn in the classroom and what you will do professionally, while gearing you up for a thriving career.
"Through multiple placements, I've experienced what it means to be a real-world pharmacist – and have even secured a part-time job in a community pharmacy alongside my studies," says Caspar Townsend, a Bachelor of Science (Pharmacy) student at Curtin.
You may have the chance to work in our various student-led clinics, delivering real services to the community alongside peers from disciplines like speech pathology, occupational therapy and physiotherapy. You might even complete a placement in a regional or international setting.
2. Global study opportunities
Studying at university is about building knowledge, developing critical skills and discovering your worldview. Global study experiences are one of the best ways to do all three.
As a health sciences student at Curtin, you can take part in many exciting short-term placements and programs in nearby countries.
For example, our Health Science Global Experiences program lets you complete a four-week clinical placement in countries such as Cambodia, India, or Vietnam. You'll deliver services relevant to your course, exchange knowledge, and collaborate with local healthcare teams.
And, in certain courses – like our Doctor of Physiotherapy or the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery – you can travel anywhere in the world to complete a placement. So, if you want to visit Canada, or nearby countries, while progressing your studies, many Curtin courses set you up to do just that.
These experiences help you develop a global mindset, cultural awareness and clinical confidence – essential qualities for a future-ready health professional.
3. Immersive simulated learning
At Curtin, you'll learn to treat patients in high-tech training spaces that feel like real healthcare settings – so by the time you get to your first placement, you're ready to go.
"We have amazing facilities available to us, including the lab rooms, OT-specific rooms and study spaces," explains Becca Codd, a Bachelor of Science (Occupational Therapy) student.
Here are a few examples of how you'll experience immersive learning at Curtin:
- Pharmacy students gain a competitive edge by practising in our purpose-designed model pharmacy with robotic dispensary.
- Occupational therapy and social work students practise client-centred and family-focused care in simulated interprofessional settings.
- Medical students gain hands-on experience in our simulated hospital ward, which includes computer-controlled manikins and realistic moulage.
Across Western Australia, we have campuses, locations, and industry partners, giving you plenty of diverse opportunities to enhance your expertise (and explore Australia's west coast at the same time!).
