Top Skills to Work in Tech

Each year, students of our Master in Digital Business & Innovation take part in Global Immersion Week — and this year we ventured out to Dublin. Ireland’s capital is now home to a booming tech scene, making it the perfect place for insights on digital transformation. We’re going to delve into how the Global Immersion Week gave our students hands-on learning about innovation, and investigate what it takes to work in tech.

Working with tech companies in Dublin

Did you know the tech industry employs over 37,000 people across Ireland and generates €35 billion in exports every year? And Dublin is currently home to companies like LinkedIn, Google, Microsoft, Salesforce and TikTok — all of whom met with our students during Global Immersion Week.

Our sessions with top tech professionals focused on bridging the gap between business and tech. Students were also treated to alumni presentations, company tours and first-hand insights into what it’s like to work at all of these firms. This shone a light on an array of different career paths in tech, including sales, product, and operations.

This year, we learned how understanding the technical side of business and the bigger picture gives you a competitive edge. According to Mark Fren, a student on the trip, “Each company visit was unique and insightful. We were able to see firsthand that Google, LinkedIn, and Salesforce have a great work culture that fosters collaboration, innovation, and employee growth. What made our experience even more impactful was seeing the passion and enthusiasm the alumni showed as they talked about their career journeys and experiences within these companies.”

Unique skills to work in tech sales

Working in tech sales is a top opportunity for graduates in Dublin. This is a dynamic field that requires both technical and business skills — which makes it a great fit for our Master in Digital Business and Innovation students, who spend their time with us learning essential skills in digital business strategies, project management, and emerging technologies.

Tech sales may seem daunting at first, especially for those without a strong technical background. However, the right set of skills can pave the way for success. Here’s a breakdown of the key skills that are critical for a successful career in tech sales.

1. Product knowledge

You need to understand the product you’re selling inside and out. That means knowing how it works, what problems it solves and how this compares to competitors. Global Immersion Week helps students see how tech companies like Google and Salesforce handle their products and pitch them to customers.

2. Technical communication

The ability to clearly explain complex tech products in simple terms is a must for working in tech sales. During Global Immersion Week, students learn how to present technical solutions in a clear and engaging way — an essential skill when interacting with clients who may not be familiar with new technology.

3. Technical demonstration

To work in tech sales, you need to present the product’s capabilities. That could mean presenting through video conferencing, slides or live demos. Our Master in Digital Business & Innovation students learn how to present technical products in a way that resonates with customers.

4. Technical problem-solving

You also need to be able to solve problems on the fly. That could mean handling objections or troubleshooting issues whenever they arise. By applying analytical and strategic thinking to sales scenarios, our students are better equipped to respond to client concerns and close deals.

5. Technical learning

The world of tech is constantly changing. Tech sales professionals must be adaptable in their knowledge and ready to learn about new tools and trends. The Master in Digital Business & Innovation incorporates continuous learning through coursework and projects, keeping students updated on the latest developments and preparing them for the fast-paced nature of the tech sales field.
