As you’re finishing your last few months of high school, you’re probably looking ahead to the fall where you’ll begin college! This is an exciting time for you, and where you live can make a huge difference to your student experience. Living in residence is the easiest way to begin your transition to college, and at Sheridan, you don’t need to wait for your program acceptance to apply to residence!
Since this might be your first time living away from home, it’s a good idea to learn why living in residence during your first year is a great option, what the experience is like, and what Sheridan has to offer. So, let’s dive right in:
Benefits of living in residence in your first year?
There’s a reason why living in residence is a popular option for first-year students. You’ll be fully immersed in campus life, making it a great way to make the most out of your college experience. Here are some reasons why living in residence could be the right move for you:
- Make friends: You’ll be surrounded by other students who are in the same boat as you, and by living in the same residence, you’ll make friends quicker.
- Eliminate your commute: There’s nothing worse than waking up early to walk outside in the cold for your classes. Luckily, residences are located on campus, which means your walks will be shorter and you’ll be right in the middle of all the events and activities.
- Built-in communities: There’s always something going on to keep you entertained in the residence community. You can attend fun events and enjoy perks like movie lounges, game rooms, study lounges, and more.
- Gain your independence: Living in residence helps you balance your studies, social life, and responsibilities. With no one around to remind you to do your homework or tidy up, you’ll quickly learn time management — a skill that will help you throughout college and beyond.
- Safety and security: Residence Advisors are returning students that are available to help ease you into the transition into college. They can help advise you on academic and personal issues, and complete nightly rounds of the building. All residences also are secure with controlled-access entry and 24-hour on-site staff.
- Live in a fully furnished dorm: You won’t have to worry about buying or transporting bulky furniture since your room will come with everything you need!
Residence life is an experience that will stay with you. Your stay here will be like a home away from home. You'll get to know the people in your community and make connections that will last a lifetime.
Your room and residence at Sheridan
If you’re studying at the main campus, Trafalgar Road Campus (Oakville), then you have an option between two on-campus residences. Collectively, both residences house 824 students!
Selecting your roommate
Both Sheridan residences offer comfortable two-bedroom, suite-style dorms that are fully furnished and offer air conditioning. This means that you’ll have your own private bedroom, and you’ll share a washroom and kitchenette with another student.
Don’t stress about your roommate! You’ll have the chance to browse potential roommates online, send messages, and accept your roommate. So, if you have a friend you want to room with, then this is your chance to pick each other. If not, you’ll be matched with another student based on the personality profile you’ll complete during the application process.
What will your suite include?
Want to get a better idea of what your suite will look like? Each bedroom comes with:
- a double bed (54” x 80”)
- a desk and chair
- a two-drawer dresser
- closet space with storage
- high-speed internet
The shared kitchenette comes with:
- a fridge
- a kitchen table and chairs
- a microwave
- a cabinet and sink with counter space
- a thermostat
Common areas
When you’re living in residence, you’re not just confined to your suite. Each residence offers additional spaces to enjoy, including:
- common kitchens
- laundry rooms
- study lounges
|
- game rooms
- movie lounges
- fitness rooms
- outdoor barbecue areas
|
You may have noticed that your suite has a kitchenette and your residence has a larger, fully equipped communal kitchen. This is because Sheridan doesn’t offer meal plans, so you’ll be doing your own cooking. But, on those long days of studying where you don’t feel like cooking, you can always check out one of the on-campus food vendors!
Tour the residences
When you sign up for a campus tour, you may also get a tour of the Sheridan residence and get a feel for the campus.
Not sure you can make it in-person? No worries! You can also take a virtual tour of residence to see the space and picture yourself living there.

If you’re not studying at the main Trafalgar Campus, you’ll still have residence options. Sheridan also has a residence at their Davis Campus in Brampton, and while their Hazel McCallion Campus in Mississauga doesn’t have its own residence, HMC students can apply to live at the Davis residence and enjoy a quick commute with convenient public transit links.
