Societies, Volunteering, and Work: Trying New Things in University

University is all about trying new things and meeting like-minded people!

University is all about trying new things and meeting like-minded people. One of the best ways to do this is by joining a society or getting involved in a volunteering project during your studies.

Societies

Herts SU has over 100 societies offering everything from salsa dancing to LGBT and baking to K-pop.

Societies are like mini communities on campus that bring together students with similar interests. They range from academic and cultural to music and social so there's something for everyone. Being part of a society is a great way to try something new, meet new people, and open yourself up to many different opportunities.

All clubs and societies are run by students which means you can decide the activities, events, and experiences you take part in.

Student media

If you're interested in a career in the media, or you just want to try something new, Herts SU offers a variety of roles for you to get involved in, including writing articles for the student newspaper, 'The Trident, and presenting a show on our resident student radio station, 'Trident Radio'.

Taking part in student media will give you valuable experience to put on your resumé. Many alumni who were involved with student media during their studies have gone to have successful careers with the BBC, Centaur Media and Global.

Volunteering and fundraising

Volunteering during your studies will give you valuable experiences including opportunities to explore foreign countries on international charitable projects. If you volunteer with Herts SU you can receive a formal certificate at the end of the year which recognizes the hard work you have put in.

The best bit is that while you're developing your transferable skills, you’ll feel good about the work you're doing, giving back, and making a significant difference to local, national or even international causes that matter to you.

Community Garden

We have our own allotment plots on campus. A group of student volunteers worked with local charity Groundwork East to prepare the plots and planted various vegetables, like chard, potatoes, garlic, onions, lettuce, broccoli, and sprouts.

This area is available to all students and staff, offering a fantastic volunteering opportunity to maintain the plots. Gardening is not only a great way to improve our green spaces on campus, but also improves overall wellbeing.

Trips and experiences

The University takes great pride in its social program across the year. Whether it’s a trip in the UK or abroad, we offer something for everyone. We run regular trips to London, Oxford, Stonehenge, Bath, Cambridge, Paris, and more.
