Students and instructor work together to ensure they're ready to apply to post-secondary education at Olds College.

Applying to post-secondary is a big decision, so you need to ensure that you are prepared to take that step. You should do everything you can to make the process as easy as possible. Here are six key questions to ask yourself to be sure you're ready.

1. What do you want to be when you grow up?
The most important step is deciding what your end-goal is. What kind of career do you want? What kind of program are you interested in taking? Take the time to really reflect on your values, interests and skills. Research different jobs and talk to people who have jobs that you find interesting.

2. Where is the program you want offered?
Once you have narrowed down the type of career or program you want to pursue, it's time to research the different institutions that offer the program you want. Universities, colleges, technical institutes and more — there are so many options to choose from. Spend some time looking at institution websites, talking to program advisors and try to determine which option might be best.

3. Do you have the requirements?
You need to make sure that you meet the admission requirements for the program you want. Most institutions post their admission information on their website, so find out if you have all the correct high school courses. If not, you may be eligible for an Alternate or Mature Student Admission, if the institution has an option like that. Upgrading would also be an option. Some programs also have other requirements that must be met, such as volunteer hours, interviews, portfolios, and so on, so you want to ensure you can meet those as well. A final thing to consider is if the admissions is done on a "first qualified, first admitted" basis, or if it's competitive admission.

4. When should you apply?
Check the institution website to determine when applications open for your program of choice. Also find out if there is an application deadline. Even if there isn't, many programs are popular and fill up quickly, so it's always best to apply early.

5. What supporting documents do you need to submit?
High school transcripts will definitely need to be submitted. If you've previously attended post-secondary, you should submit those transcripts as well. You might be eligible for some transfer credit! Again, some programs require things like a career investigation report, a resumé or a portfolio to be submitted before you can be admitted, so it's always a good idea to have those ready to go when you apply.

6. Do I really want to go there?
The final consideration is if you really want to attend that specific institution. The best way to determine if the institution you want to apply to is the best one for you is to go and visit! Go for a tour, attend an Open House or other visit event, and get a real feel for the campus.

Making sure you've done your research and you're prepared will ensure that the application process goes as smoothly as possible. Hopefully you get admitted!
