Living On-Campus or Off-Campus. How Do You Choose?
What about on-campus housing makes it unique?
Choosing your post-secondary institution can be difficult. Once you decide, you then have to choose where you are going to live — what will be your home base? Choosing between living on-campus in university housing or off-campus is a big decision that can be tough to make. Living both on and off of campus has its pros and cons. We compiled some responses from University of Regina students collected over the past several years about on-campus housing and how it changed or improved their university experience.
Proximity
Being able to live where you study has been found to be an important factor for students when considering where to live during their schooling. Having no daily commute and being closer to tutors, faculty, and other classmates living on campus can be a significant benefit in one's studies and reduces stress that can get in the way of one's overall success.
Social
If you live near lots of university students, you'll get to know lots of university students. Being a resident in on-campus housing puts you near all the programming and events that campus housing hosts — including lots of free food events — and makes it easier to meet new people and make new friends.
Cost
Living on-campus isn't going to cost you an arm and a leg. Prices to live on campus are actually comparable to apartments and townhouses off-campus, especially considering all that is included in the price of rent and the added benefits of living so close to where you study. Utilities, cable, internet, and fully furnished rooms are what you'll get when you live on campus, and having it all wrapped up into one bill makes living on-campus an easy process.
