York University provides students with an education that helps you develop technical expertise and practical experience to prepare for your future career. York U students can gain professional skills by utilizing the Career Centre, taking advantage of on-campus employment roles as well as exploring York U’s experiential education opportunities. Learn about YorkU’s career development programs below:

  1. 1. Career Centre

  2. One of the best resources for professional development that is available to current York U students is right here on campus! Visit YorkU’s Career Centre and/or explore their online career development tools. The Career Centre is one of our most useful support services for students looking to develop their professional skills and prepare for their future by providing them with:
    • job search and skills workshops;
    • cover letter and resume critiques;
    • practice interview sessions;
    • peer-to-peer support;
    • employer recruitment events and job fairs.

    York U understands that students are busy with part-time work, personal commitments and day-to-day commutes. To better serve current students, the Career Centre offers online appointments with Career Counsellors to discuss the careers you want to explore after you achieve your degree. You’ll be assessed based on your program of study, your personality, interests and hobbies. The best part is that there’s no limit to how many appointments you can book! It’s a great way to take advantage of all the improvement opportunities available at YorkU.

    In addition, the Career Centre hosts Career Fairs and employer recruitment events to help students meet employers and discover new organizations. They also host Employer Recruitment Sessions, Speed Hiring events and other networking events. Additionally, students who are looking to expand your network can participate in the Take A Student To Eat (TASTE) program, which connects York U students with alumni mentors. They also host Career Conversation panels where students can explore a variety of careers within a specific field, connect with York U alumni and individuals working in their field of interest and get inside tips on securing employment in a specific industry from professionals who do the hiring.

  3. 2. Work/Study Roles and Research Opportunities

  4. York students can start their careers while they’re still in school too! They can take part in York’s Work/Study opportunities, which include part-time roles working with administration and faculties, as well as roles that focus on research and campus engagement. Eligible undergraduates can apply for Research at York (RAY) positions to join faculty research projects; College Life at York (CLAY) jobs, which focus on enhancing the student experience; or the York Engaged Students (YES) student leadership program. Eligible students can apply for York’s Internship program or find other employment opportunities on the Career Centre job board. If you are considering adding an internship or co-op work/study opportunity to your degree, York has several options depending on your area of studies.

  5. 3. Internships, Co-operative and Experiential Education at York

  6. With experiential education opportunities, students can engage in guided practical experiences in the broader community, in the workplace or in the classroom. You can collaborate with community partners and contribute meaningful work that moves organizations and businesses toward their goals. These opportunities are great chances to complement your in-class education with hands-on work experience. In many cases, work placements are paid positions and, therefore, can also help to offset the financial cost of a university education.

    One example is the Dev Degree with the Lassonde School of Engineering, in partnership with leading multi-channel e-commerce platform Shopify, which embeds students directly into development teams at Shopify through a paid internship opportunity while they are also studying for their degree.

    York U is dedicated to helping students start their early careers - explore the Future Students website to learn more about these opportunities at YorkU!
