We all know tests, exams, and assignments can be stressful. Overall success with these largely depends on your study habits, and effective study habits can be learned by any student! Planning, preparing, and performing is much easier when you have a clear direction in mind and you start early.

Planning starts with expectations; find out what to expect on the test or exam and the expectations your teacher has of you. Once you know what to expect, you can decide the strategies to use. The key to performing well on tests and exams is to begin studying early and use short, frequent sessions. You will learn the material faster and more comprehensively when you use shorter sessions over a long period of time, rather than cramming right before an exam or test.

Preparing a plan in advance of every test, exam or assignment will help you improve your focus, gain confidence, manage stress, and be successful. TIP: If you have taken effective notes throughout the semester, studying for exams and completing assignments is much easier! Learning how to take effective notes can not only help you improve your marks but become a more engaged learner in the classroom. Lakehead University's Student Success Centre can help you learn how to take effective notes and then create an effective study plan using a variety of techniques such as flashcards, outlines, and concept maps.

Proper planning and preparation is the best way to build confidence and perform well on your test, exam or assignment. Getting a full night’s sleep, eating regular, balanced meals, and getting some exercise several times a week will help you stay healthy throughout the term and encounter fewer distractions when it’s time to focus. Remember that you’ve succeeded in the past, and you are able to do so again!
