How many times have you heard the saying, “you’ve got the world in your hands?” While that might be physically impossible, it’s definitely not impossible to explore the world so you know it like the back of your own hand. At Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in Kamloops, BC, we want you to do just that!

TRU’s on-campus student population represents more than 80 different countries. With such an extensive international network, there are some extraordinary opportunities for TRU students to study abroad, subsequently attaining what we like to call a multi-cultural “Super Degree” and a huge competitive advantage in today’s marketplace.

To study abroad means to study, work or volunteer in another country and gain credits toward your degree. Generally, TRU students study abroad in their second or third year, and choose from options in over 40 countries. The first, and most well-known, is a Student Exchange where students live and study in a different country for one or two semesters. Take Will, a Political Science major, who spent a semester at Abo Akademi University in Finland and also met a few reindeer along the way! A shorter option is a Field School, where a group of TRU students travel together under the leadership of TRU faculty; for instance, every year, some of TRU’s Natural Resource Science students explore the flora and fauna of Belize. You can also build your resume by experiencing different Co-operative Education work terms, practicums or internships in other countries, as well as volunteering for credit. For example, our Nursing students work in village medical clinics in Lesotho and Samoa every summer.

The world awaits you, so what are you waiting for? If you’re a current university student, find more information about TRU’s Study Abroad opportunities online. Or, if you’re just starting to plan your next learning adventure, remember TRU started accepting applications October 1, 2013. You can check out more information about TRU by exploring tru.ca or by emailing TRU Student Recruitment at recruitment@tru.ca. Good luck, have fun and happy travels!
