University = Making Memories & Lifelong Friends
Algoma University extends student life on campus by offering its international students the opportunity to actively engage with community members by taking on one of the many volunteer options made available to them.
University life is more than time spent in class and studying day after day. Indeed, as a young person, this is the time of your life! Student success = get involved!
Volunteering on campus and outside in the community of Sault Ste Marie has provided students at Algoma University with the chance to build upon valuable skills to enhance their resumes and gain Canadian ‘experience’, as well as the gateway for them to develop meaningful relationships with new friends.
University life is all about making memories … and lifelong friends.
Students are invited to arrive at Algoma University in mid-August to participate in Summer Study, a two-week student success program that focuses on team building, integrating into student life, key aspects of contemporary Canadian culture and recreational activities, and general components of academic orientation. During this time, students live with a Canadian family as part of Algoma’s homestay program, and they actively engage in community social events on evenings and weekends.
Throughout Summer Study’s two-week program, every day students are introduced to a variety of volunteer options that they may consider as a long-term options into the school year, including the local Soup Kitchen, the Salvation Army, YMCA day camps; senior centers and retirement homes; Habitant for Humanity, after-school and Sunday church programs; the Food Bank, and long-term volunteering in local elementary schools.
