Telephone Operators

(NOC 1424)

These comments apply to the career grouping of Office Equipment Operators, which includes Telephone Operators.

Job openings in this occupation will result almost entirely from replacement needs, mainly due to retirements. In fact, as a result of technological advances, employment growth will continue to decrease over the next few years albeit at a lesser rate than that recorded for the 1999-2008 period. Moreover, the retirement rate will remain high as office equipment operators tend to retire younger on average, despite having a younger than average employment age. Most job seekers in this category tend to be students, but immigrants will account for about 20 percent of job seekers. Given the occupation's weak career prospects and relatively low wages, many workers are expected to leave this occupation in the coming years for other clerical or administrative positions, which will increase replacement needs.
