Profile

St. Andrew's College (SAC) is a highly esteemed, independent, ecumenical boys' school with facilities for its 535 students, both boarding (267) and day (268), from Grade 6 through 12. St. Andrew's is divided into the Middle School and the Upper School. The Middle School (Grades 6 to 8) establishes a solid foundation for learning through a nurturing and challenging curriculum designed to prepare boys for the challenges of the Upper School. The Upper School prepares students for university and life beyond graduation. The student to faculty ratio at St. Andrew's is 9 to 1. The average class size is 18 students. Set on 110 acres of beautifully treed grounds, St Andrew's is located in Aurora, 45 minutes north of Toronto. It is easily accessible by car and public transit can deliver the students from Toronto to the gates of the school. It is also within 45 minutes of Lester B. Pearson International Airport.

Areas of Expertise

As a university preparatory school, St. Andrew's mission is to develop "the complete man, the well rounded citizen". As such, all of our strengths and resources are directed towards the spiritual, moral, academic, athletic, and cultural education and enrichment of each student's life. The school's 60 full-time faculty, (30 of whom live on campus with their families), specialize in encouraging boys to develop their character and knowledge through participation in the full life and opportunities offered by the school. This includes an enriched academic (AP) curriculum augmented by technology in every discipline. This year, students will be provided with a laptop to work within our existing wireless environment. As the first Canadian boarding school to network its residences, SAC remains on the leading edge of technology. Through the benefits of our wireless environment, boarding students have access to e-mail and Internet, thereby eliminating the need for desktop computers in the rooms. Outside of academics, St. Andrew's fields 22 sports across 57 teams and while excelling in traditional disciplines, such as social sciences and sciences, it also maintains arguably the best theatre arts program at the high school level in Canada. Career Planning

There is a compulsory civics and careers curriculum in Grade 10 that is used in conjunction with university planning up to their graduating year.

Sports

With athletic facilities to rival a small university, students can choose from a wide variety of sports played over three terms. Fall sports include cross country, fencing, football, house league, soccer, and volleyball. Winter term sports are alpine skiing, basketball, cross country skiing, fencing, hockey, house league, indoor track, squash, and swimming. Spring term sports played are badminton, cricket, golf, house league, lacrosse, rugby, table tennis, softball, tennis, and track and field. A sports commitment is mandatory each term unless a 'term off' is approved for academic or medical reasons only; several sports are available on an intramural or recreational basis.

Activities

There are a variety of activities provided each evening for Macdonald House students (Grades 6 through 8). All students are required to be involved in the Cadet Corps program, which provides training in citizenship, encourages discipline, and offers invaluable opportunities for leadership. Along with the Cadet program is the option to choose a variety of other activities, such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award (young Canadians' Challenge), the Cadet Music program, Cadet ceremonial duties, and assorted social activities. There is also a schedule of weekend activities to which students subscribe in advance. The Ministry of Education requires students to fulfill 40 hours of community service in high school before graduation. Opportunities for volunteer service are announced each week and most students will graduate having exceeded the required number of hours.

Clubs

Middle School clubs are available to Macdonald House boarders during, before, and after evening study hours. Students in the Middle School are challenged to explore the arts through both seasonal and year round activities and are able to participate in such activities as the Middle School newspaper, visual arts, debating, multimedia, jazz band, and piping and drumming. A host of Upper School clubs are offered including clubs in the music/arts/media, public speaking, computing, strategy, international affairs, outdoor activities, literary/writing/philosophy, business skills, and volunteer outreach and community service.

Information Technology

A variety of research studies have demonstrated the wisdom of combining laptops and learning. The laptop is portable, flexible, personal and powerful, and laptop classrooms are more collaborative. Students become confident, creative, and expressive learners. St. Andrew's students will be provided with a personal notebook Dell Latitude laptop. The educational advantage is obvious; the laptop will be their own personal laboratory for intellectual exploration that extends beyond the walls and hours of the school. All academic and administrative buildings are already connected by the school's wireless network, along with each residence room, enabling e-mail, Intranet, and Internet access.

Cultural

The St. Andrew's community is made up of 535 students, roughly 20% of whom attend from 15 different countries. Different languages are often heard in the hallways and are encouraged so students on campus can become accustomed to living in a "global" world.

International Involvement

Exchange programs are available each year in several languages. There are also student clubs that pursue volunteer opportunities overseas. For more information, contact the Admissions Office.

Campus Tour

Tours of the school are given by students currently attending St. Andrew's. The tour guides are most often in the same grade year as the applicant in order for the student to learn from someone their own age and feel comfortable asking questions. At St. Andrew's, if an unfamiliar face is looking lost, students of all grades will ask if they can help you to find where you are going. Tours are by appointment and can be arranged by contacting the Admissions Office.
