Description:

This program is taught by Animal Health Technologists. Students learn about the health issues of companion animals including vaccines, parasites, medical conditions, diets, reproduction, common surgeries, dentistry and other important topics. Granville Business College VOA®'s are in demand in veterinary clinics and other organizations where the health and welfare of animals is of primary importance. The Veterinary Assistant Program includes lectures, mock veterinary clinics, animal handling and restraint classes. Guest speakers include representatives of leading pharmaceutical companies including Merial, Wyeth, Pfizer and Intervet; a representative of Pet Plan Insurance; and Dr. Greenberg who speaks on holistic medicine. Field trips include the SPCA, the Vancouver Animal Emergency Clinic, the Canada West Veterinary Specialists & Critical Care Hospital and Vancouver Animal Control.

The VOA® Diploma Program is 24 weeks in duration and includes a three-week practicum in a veterinary clinic. School hours are 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The Program consists of six courses: VOA® Fundamentals; Small Animal Health Management; Surgical Procedures Awareness; Veterinary Office Procedures; Client Services and Communication Skills; Career Planning.

    Those wishing to attend Granville Business College and enroll in the Veterinary Assistant Diploma Program must meet the following requirements: Regular admission - complete academic grade 12 (or GED grade 12 with grade 10 academic standing); Mature student admission - twenty years of age or older with grade 11; Physically capable of performing the duties of a Veterinary Assistant; Attendance at a personal interview.
