Areas of Expertise

The U of A is a leader in innovation among universities in Canada offering excellence in research, teaching, academics, and state of the art facilities. Canada's National Institute for Nanotechnology is located on the U of A's main campus and is one of the world's leading facilities for nanotech research.

Our professors are known internationally for their research achievements, and have won more 3M Teaching Awards (Canada's highest honour for teaching) and hold more Ph.D.s than any other university in Canada.

Our campus spans over 50 city blocks with more than 100 buildings and is still growing. U of A campus is home to Western Canada's largest teaching hospital, the new Engineering Teaching and Learning complex, the second largest library in Canada and over 400 distinct research laboratories.

The University of Alberta offers a range of high quality housing options on campus. Students may choose from a variety of accommodations including dormitory and apartment style rooms, furnished and unfurnished. Amenities can include study halls, cable TV, meal plans, Internet access, parking and retail stores.

Off Campus Housing

Incoming Students

U of A's Orientation program provides new students with a chance to meet others and familiarize themselves with the campus. It is held the two days prior to the start of classes and in conjunction with Week of Welcome, which offers a carnival of events and activities to welcome students back to school. Some of the activities taking place during the Week of Welcome include concerts, the sleeping bag drive in, club fairs, varsity athletics and much more.

Career Planning

By signing up to the CaPS NetWORK, a newsletter that pertains to your area of study will regularly be delivered into your inbox. CaPS also assists students on writing resumes, cover letters and the preparation of effective interviews.


The U of A also participates in competitive athletics and is home to the Golden Bears (men's) and Pandas (women's) highly successful varsity teams. U of A offers world class athletic and recreation facilities on campus with two gymnasiums, indoor tennis courts, fitness centres, squash and racquetball courts, an indoor climbing wall, pools, dance studios, and more. In fact, our facilities were used in the World 2001 Track and Field Championships.


The University of Alberta campus is busy and lively! Throughout campus, students enjoy shops, residences, restaurants, and lounges, as well as special events such as concerts and guest speakers. The Campus is located in the heart of the city, minutes away from downtown and surrounded by the beautiful Edmonton river valley.


The University of Alberta has more than 300 student clubs and associations. Students can keep up with social events through the Gateway, our campus newspaper or CJSR, our campus radio station.

Information Technology

The U of A is continuously on the forefront of information technology. The University provides a computing ID to all students and staff, granting them high quality Internet access in our wireless network throughout campus. In addition, students have the opportunity to learn in technologically enhanced SMART classrooms and use the 43 computer labs across campus.


Edmonton has a celebrated arts and culture community. Known as "Canada's Festival City," Edmonton hosts over 30 festivals throughout the year with many different celebrations of sport, music, theatre, and more. There are many cultural attractions throughout the city with a variety of museums, art galleries and theatres.

International Involvement

The University of Alberta gives students a truly global experience! We offer dozens of exchange programs to many countries. Students also have the opportunity to attend the only official U of A campus outside of Canada, the Faculty of Arts campus in Cortona, Italy. The University also maintains agreements (research linkages, exchanges, professional and community development) with institutions in three dozen countries.

In the centre of campus, you will find a bus terminal with subway access to downtown and north Edmonton. The bus terminal also offers routes that will take you throughout the city granting easy access to Edmonton's attractions.
