Malaspina High School (MHS) is a high school located on the campus of Vancouver Island University (formerly Malaspina University-College) in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. The government of British Columbia certifies MHS to offer students Grade 10 to 12 programs that will lead to a British Columbia high school graduation diploma. This diploma is recognized throughout North America as a high quality credential for post-secondary admission. Graduates of MHS can continue their studies at Vancouver Island University, or other Canadian or North America colleges and universities. Our students embrace the concept of an international educational experience provided in the mature environment of a university campus. Our Bridging program allows students to share in all the resources and facilities with 10,000 university students on campus. Students interested in a short term summer study program can study English and enjoy a recreation program for stays from two to eight weeks.

Areas of Expertise

Malaspina High School employs British Columbia certified teachers who provide a high quality, challenging educational experience to students from a variety of countries from around the world. The average class size is 12! Each student is assured of the necessary personal attention required to be successful. In addition to the graduation program, students can participate in a program of curricular and extracurricular activities including athletics, clubs, and the arts. Formal school activities include ski trips to locations such as the world famous Whistler Ski Resort, hiking, kayaking, and numerous "special day" events.

Students requiring a homestay arrangement can live with a Canadian family. The cost is $650.00 per month. International students under the age of 18 are required to live in a homestay with a Canadian family.

Incoming Students

First year international high school students will begin a program of English instruction combined with other courses, which is specifically designed to meet their level of English proficiency.

Career Planning

All students receive assistance and guidance regarding the selection of courses to meet university entrance requirements. Students wishing to attend a university other than Vancouver Island University will receive assistance with the application process.

Sports

Athletic facilities include the full gymnasium facilities of Vancouver Island University. Students participate in a program of intramural and team activities such as basketball, skiing, and volleyball.

Field trips, ski trips, and activity days.

Clubs

Clubs include Campus Intercultural Society, Student's Council, Music Club, Cooking Club, Stock Market Club, and Mathematics Club. New clubs begin to meet student requests.

Information Technology

Malaspina High School has a technologically advanced computer lab providing students with the most up to date Internet and e-mail capabilities. Students also have access to numerous computer stations throughout the university campus. Courses specializing in computer technology such as data processing are popular with students.

Cultural

Vancouver Island University enrols some 400 international students from over 35 countries. Malaspina High School students have the opportunity for a variety of cultural interactions with not only high school students, but university students too. MHS is dedicated to the principle of "better understanding through cultural interaction".

Special Services

Students with a high level of academic motivation are encouraged to write advanced placement exams to gain advanced credit when they enrol at a post-secondary institution.

Affiliated Institutions

Malaspina High School is affiliated with Vancouver Island University, a degree granting, and diploma or certificate granting institution enrolling some 8,000 students.

International Involvement

Canadian students attending MHS can attend school in another country and receive course credit toward their graduation requirements.
