Calgary is located on the doorstep of the majestic Rocky Mountains. Our young and modern city has a population of almost one million people. It is known for its warm hospitality, lively western spirit, and fun year round activities. Our school is located in downtown Calgary on the ninth floor of the modern Gulf Canada Building, a couple of minutes by foot from the Light Rapid Transit System. An indoor walkway also connects it to great shopping, restaurants, and pubs.

Areas of Expertise

GV Calgary offers a wide variety of English language programs for international students of all levels of ability from beginner to advanced. We are distinctively committed to quality of the highest standards in the areas of academics, extracurricular activities, homestay, and student services. Our small classes are communication based and focus on speaking, listening, grammar, and vocabulary building. Our nationality quota system ensures we have a large number of students from different countries year round. GV teachers are university educated, highly experienced, and certified to teach ESL. Many have taught overseas and understand the challenges of learning a foreign language. All GV schools are authorized to administer the TOEIC exam as well as the examinations in English as a Foreign Language by the University of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate.

Off Campus Housing

Global Village offers quality homestay services for students who want to experience local culture in a safe and secure environment. The homestay program includes: - Access to TV and telephone - Airport pick up and drop off (on request) - Careful selection of families - Laundry facilities - Private, comfortable room - Professional counselling service - Three meals per day All Global Village schools offer a variety of residential and apartment accommodation. Incoming Students

Global Village English Centres conduct a full day orientation on the first day of the session. Students should arrive at 8:30 in the morning (please check with school directly). Sample Orientation 8:30 a.m. Students arrive, coffee and tea 8:45 a.m. Begin level testing 9:45 a.m. Welcome speeches by director and school coordinators, review school information 10:00 a.m. Activities orientation 10:30 a.m. Student interviews and oral assessments 12:00 noon Lunch 1:00 p.m. Homestay orientation 1:45 p.m. Review school policies and contracts, questions and answers 2:30 p.m. School/campus tour 3:30 p.m. Finish Students are requested to bring their passport (and visa), medical insurance form, and registration information.

Career Planning

GV counsellors are specially qualified to help the students choose the most suitable college or university for further studies. GV programs are officially recognized by several universities and colleges. Information on a variety of programs is available at all GV schools. Sports

For each session, the activities and events coordinators organize cultural and recreational pursuits, which are fun, entertaining, and reflect the characteristics of the area. Various cultural and recreational activities are organized on a frequent basis with the participation of school staff. The number of participants may be limited in some activities and students should sign up early. Students are responsible for any extra fees.

Activities

Global Village believes that student participation in a variety of recreational and cultural activities is central to a positive experience at the school. For each session, the activities coordinators organize cultural and recreational pursuits that are fun, entertaining, and reflect the characteristics of the area. Students are responsible for any extra fees. Our school organizes regular dance parties and all school events with a variety of themes throughout the year.

Clubs

Introducing GV Voice! A student Web centre built by and for the students of GV. Students visiting GV Voice can develop their language skills and have a common meeting place for gathering information, finding resources, and exchanging ideas. GV Voice is just one part of the new project/task based learning CALL initiative being integrated into classrooms. For more information on clubs, please contact us.

Information Technology

Multimedia computers with access to a high speed Internet connection allow students to surf the Web, check e-mail, and study at their own speed. Software includes Speech Master, Pronunciation Power, Language Builder, Double Up, Vocabulary Roots, Verb Development, Invest, WordPerfect, Windows, Encyclopedia, and Typing Tutors. Headphones are also available. State of the art desktop computers or laptop computers are available for use in the Business English program.

Affiliated Institutions

GV Calgary (Rocky Mountain English Centre, established in 1995) is a privately owned limited company and is incorporated in Alberta. The school is also member of the Canada Language Council (CLC). GV Calgary instructors are members of Alberta Teachers of English as a Second Language (ATESL, branch of TESL Canada).

International Involvement

GV attracts students from all over the world to learn English, communicate, and share their culture. Our nationality quota system ensures there are students from many countries. There are seven Global Village schools, each with its own special ambience, located in three countries: Canada, Australia, and USA. Students can register at more than one location or transfer between schools during their course of study.

Campus Tour

Occupying the top three floors of the North-West Travellers Building, the school has been designed to provide students with an excellent environment in which to study and meet friends from around the world.
