Located io the pristine Gulf Island of Gabriola, the Island School of Building Arts was established in 1997. ISBA trade school is the only private trade school in BC, Canada specializing in teaching Log & Timber Frame construction skills for the owner/builder and for Industry Pre Employment, as well as workshops in SketchUp for Timber Framers and Solar Photovoltaic Installation. ISBA is highly regarded by industry and students from around the world meet here to learn the age old craft of working with big wood. Maximum number of students for Timber Frame courses is 16 and 12 for Log Building, so you can work at your own pace under the guidance of our instructor and the instructional assistant. We teach a wholistic view to nature's art in architecture, with simplicity and purity of form, using BC timbers.

Areas of Expertise

Many students choose to take the full three-month Big Wood program which includes Timber Frame Post and Beam, Timber Frame Hammer Bents and Log Building but one can also choose the individual four-week course that appeals to their passion. Course curriculum is designed to provide students with a strong skill set and understanding of the complexities of working with large timber joinery.

Off Campus Housing

A list of accommodations will be provided once students have registered. Prices range from $400.00 Cdn to $1600.00 Cdn. depending on what suits your individual needs. Students are encouraged to confirm accommodations as early as possible.
