Program Information

School:University of Victoria
Degree:Bachelor; Co-op
Field of Study:Biomedical/Medical Engineering
Description:The Biomedical Engineering (BME) program at the University of Victoria offers a unique combination of engineering concepts with human anatomy and physiology. This produces BME graduates with a strong understanding of mechanical or electrical engineering fundamentals. Students take virtually identical courses up to the end of third year, while focusing on the how these concepts apply to the human body. Engineering is a field that applies the scientific discoveries to the design and creation of things that are safe, reliable and practical, and BME turns this focus toward the healthcare sector.

Biomedical engineering encompasses all areas of the public and private sectors involved with medical, biological and human adaptive research. Mandatory co-op work terms enable students to experience some of the many disciplines BME’s can follow as careers and have exposure to the complex issues arising in professional practice. These co-ops help students focus on the areas of BME that they are passionate about; from cellular development to prosthetics, these are opportunities to see the specializations in each field.
