Description: | History helps us make sense of the world we live in. The issues that make headlines today–such as warfare in the Middle East, disputes over religious freedom, the rise of China as a global economic power, international terrorism, and the increasing individualism of Western culture–all have a long history. By studying History at Redeemer, you’ll come to see how the world of the past illuminates the world of today. From ancient civilizations through to the twenty-first century, you’ll gain profound insight into human beings in all their creativity and brokenness, cruelty and heroism, despair and hope. At the same time, you’ll learn how to write, speak, and think clearly and persuasively so you can serve God effectively in your work and the public square.
In your first year, you’ll be given a university-level perspective on the grand sweep of Western history and the history of the world outside the West. Your first-year History classes won’t be taught by graduate students or part-time instructors, but by experienced full-time professors. With them as your guide, you’ll read classic books like Homer’s Odyssey and the Analects of Confucius, and study earth-shaping events ranging from the collapse of the Roman Empire to the fall of Communism. You’ll also have the opportunity to participate in the History Learning Community, taking trips to museums and historical sites, and spending time getting to know your fellow students and professors at laid-back film showings and games nights. By the end of your first year, you’ll be ready to move on to more advanced courses in specific historical topics like Nazi Germany, modern Africa, and the Reformation. |
