Description:

A degree in social work gives you the professional skills to develop interventions to solve social and personal problems. Social workers create social change by working with people as the individual, family, group, community, organization and societal levels to enhance health and overall well-being. Social workers can find fulfilling careers in child welfare agencies, departments of health and human services, hospitals, community mental health agencies, substance abuse and medical clinics and elder care facilities. The purpose of the Bachelor of Social Work degree program at Vancouver Island University is to provide education in generalist anti-oppressive social work practice.

Prerequisites:

These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.
    60 credits of post-secondary courses including: VIU Degree English Requirements min. C+; 6 credits of SOCW 200A, SOCW 200B min. B-; 24 credits of Arts & Humanities and/or Social Science courses. 24 credits of other post-secondary courses not including Social Services/Social Work courses. Min. avg GPA of 2.33 (C+) on the 48 required credits. Personal Profile. Resume. Evidence of 100 hours work experience (paid and/or volunteer) in a community and/or clinical setting. Interview may be required.
    Additional Admission Requirements:
      Applicants must submit a Personal Profile including the applicant's reasons for pursuing a social work degree that includes personal suitability for the profession of Social Work as well as personal strengths and challenges; evidence of 100 hours work experience (paid and/or volunteer) in a community and/or clinical setting. An interview may be required.
