Description:

The graduate programs in the Department of Biological Sciences at Simon Fraser University are designed to provide students with the best possible research and academic preparation. Because the Department is large and includes a wide range of academic interests, a number of research and teaching programs have evolved. Both M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs are available in diverse research areas ranging from populations to microbiology. Basic biological research and graduate education in the areas of behavioural and wildlife ecology are coordinated through the Behavioural Ecology Research Group. The Department also offers the M.P.M. (Master of Pest Management) and M.E.T. (Master of Environmental Toxicology) degree programs. Other major areas of research interest are animal physiology, marine biology, and plant biology.

In the M.Sc., M.P.M. and Ph.D. programs, the student is expected to undertake a rigorous program of original research, culminating in the preparation of a thesis containing a significant contribution worthy of publication in first- class international scientific journals. For the applied M.E.T. program the students undertake a defined program of graduate courses, and prepare an extended Professional Paper or Thesis on a prescribed problem. Titles of earlier theses are searchable online.
