Description:

Mathematical Physics combines the areas of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. Applied Mathematics involves the mathematical modelling and solution of practical real-world scientific problems. Applied Mathematics is at the core of many disciplines ranging from engineering and science to business and economics.

Applied mathematicians use equations and mathematical modelling to: design computer chips, model electrical power grids, study genetic patterns, create new aircraft designs, and predict the effects of global climate change. Theoretical Physics aims to provide a description of the fundamental laws of nature through Mathematics. These laws govern the behaviour of all physical objects in the universe ranging from classical Newtonian mechanics to quantum field theory.

Prerequisites:

These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.
Domestic applicants require passes in six subjects (including two at minimum HC3) including: Irish, English, a third language, and three other recognised subjects. The only prerequisite for the Stage 1 programme is a good knowledge of Mathematics (a B in the Higher Level Leaving Certificate Mathematics is strongly recommended). In particular, no previous knowledge of Applied Mathematics is assumed.

Grade 12 Secondary School Diploma: The minimum for consideration is minimum score of C in six subjects, which includes a minimum of B in two subjects, with English and specific programme requirements.

    * We make every attempt to provide accurate information on prerequisites, programs, and tuition. However, this information is subject to change without notice and we highly recommend that you contact the school to confirm important information before applying.
