Description:This two-year Ontario College Diploma program prepares students with the knowledge and skills necessary to work as a hair stylist. The program of study emphasizes a strong theory and practical component in cutting, styling, permanent waving, chemical hair relaxing, colouring and lightening hair. Students also gain knowledge and skills in hair addition service, as well as salon operations. Students demonstrate and practice these techniques in the College`s fully functional salon, developing individualized styling options, prescribing products and performing safe and hygienic practices on clients.

In conjunction with the Algonquin College Hairstyling Diploma, the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (MAESD) requires all Hairstyling graduates to become an apprentice and complete an additional 2,000 hours within a salon industry. Once both components have been satisfied, graduates are eligible to complete a Red Seal licensing exam for an additional fee. To be successful on the Red Seal licensing exam, a minimum of 70% is required to become Red Seal Certified in the trade of Hairstyling by the Ontario College of Trades.

  •  Grade12 English 

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent. Applicants with an OSSD showing senior English and/or Mathematics courses at the Basic Level, or with Workplace or Open courses, will be tested to determine their eligibility for admission; OR Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) certificate; OR General Educational Development (GED) certificate; OR Mature Student status (19 years of age or older and without a high school diploma at the start of the program). Eligibility may be determined by academic achievement testing for which a fee of $50 (subject to change) will be charged.
