Program Information

School:Algonquin College
Faculty:School of Health and Community Studies (Ottawa)
Field of Study:Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse Training
Description:This program enables internationally educated nurses (IENs) to meet entry to practice requirements set for registered practical nurses in Ontario. The program provides nurses with the basic knowledge and skills to write the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination (CPNRE). Building on the existing knowledge and skills of foreign trained nurses, focus is on gaining an understanding of nursing practice in a Canadian context. The content is presented using a variety of delivery methods, such as classroom, laboratory, simulation, media site, and clinical practice in long-term care and acute care facilities.

Internationally educated nurses with a College of Nurses assessment that states bridging is required for practice may obtain Advanced Standing in this program. Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition is used to assist IENs in gaining college diploma credit. This program is a review of the knowledge and skills the nurse acquires in their basic education and workplace experience. With the change in competencies and transitions in the workplace due to technology, this program is not structured to fill the educational gaps that would exist for nurses who have not practiced bedside nursing in more than ten years.
