Description:

The Health Care Assistant (HCA) certificate at CapU is accelerated career training that allows students to complete the program in 7 months. 

The HCA program at CapU combines theory courses, lab skills and clinical practicums in real-world health care settings. 

In the health care assistant program, you'll learn how to provide personal care to clients and residents in complex care, specialized dementia care, selected acute care settings and in the community. 

You'll develop the knowledge and skills to work with patients who have specialized needs, with training in personal care nursing, common health challenges, and cognitive and mental health challenges. 

Classes are taught by experienced Registered or Licensed Practical Nurses who share stories about their experiences in a variety of health care settings, including acute care, long-term care and home support. 

Upon graduation, you'll be ready to get working in a secure and growing field with potential to advance.

Prerequisites:

These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.

    Basic requirements 

    • High school graduation or 
    • Be at least 18 years of age with a minimum of Grade 10 English (C grade or higher) 

    Current high school students 

    Grade 12 students can apply for conditional admission based on their final Grade 11 and/or interim Grade 12 marks by uploading their most recent grades (e.g., unofficial transcript or a report card) through EducationPlannerBC. Final admission depends on high school graduation and meeting the specific requirements of the program. 

    Note: Applicants from B.C high schools must release their grades to CapU via the BC Ministry of Education at Student Transcripts Services (STS) as soon as possible.
