Description:

Taught by the Music Department’s highly-qualified faculty from the Southern California area, this program helps students to transfer to most four-year music programs at the 3rd-year level. The Applied Music Program offers its students private instruction in any acoustic instrument, voice, composition, or other applied discipline in which the student is qualified. Qualifications are determined by audition at the end of each Fall and Spring semester.

Prerequisites:

These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.
Students eligible for regular admission to Santa Monica College must be 18 years of age or older or must possess either: (1) a high school diploma from a U.S. regionally accredited or from a foreign high school; (2) a GED; (3) a California High School Certificate of Proficiency (CHSPE); or the equivalent (i.e., a HiSET score report; a TASC [Test Assessing Secondary Completion] score report).
    Application Notes :

    • Sponsor's Official Bank Statement to demonstrate you can meet SMC's estimated tuition and living expenses.
    • A copy of your passport information and expiration page.
    • Records from the last school attended. If the school was a college, university, or high school within the US, official transcripts must be sent directly from the awarding institution to the International Education Center at SMC. US transcripts must show a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
    Additional Admission Requirements:
    • Statement of Research Interests
    • Portfolio
Write a personal essay (must be at least 500 words) explaining your reason(s) for applying to Santa Monica College.

Each applicant will submit an application form and MP3s or links to uploaded videos of their recent performances of the repertoire that they plan to perform at the audition. Composers should submit two contrasting PDF scores and an MP3 of each composition. Applicants are encouraged, but not required, to include the signature of their current private music instructor or their SMC Performance Class Instructor (voice class, piano class, guitar class, etc.). The full-time faculty will review all applications and supporting materials, and a select group will be invited by email to audition in person.

All applicants who pass the Pre-Audition Screening will be assigned an audition appointment time that may not be rescheduled if the student misses their assigned time. Depending on the performance specialty, an accompanist is preferred (to be supplied by the applicant). Applicants who require an accompanist may also arrange in advance to use the designated Music Department Staff Accompanist in the event that they cannot arrange for an outside accompanist. There is a $25 fee for using the SMC Staff Accompanist that includes an eight-minute rehearsal and the audition. Each audition appointment will be scheduled for seven or eight minutes but may be shorter, at the discretion of the Audition Panel.
