Description:

This program prepares individuals with previous health care assistant education and experience for practice in BC. It is designed to address individual needs as identified through the Nursing Community Assessment Service (NCAS) HCA Competency Assessment. It enables individuals to review and enhance previously acquired knowledge and upgrade their skills to meet practice requirements so that they may become registered as HCAs in BC with BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry.

Prerequisites:

These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.
    Applicants are required to have Grade 12/GED or mature student status (all transcripts must be "true certified copies" or originals), and English 10 or equivalent with a grade of C (for native speakers of English) or Sprott Shaw College Communication for Healthcare with a grade of 76%.
    Application Notes : International students are required to submit proof of English Proficiency such as IELTS or TOEFL scores (if available) or have successfully completed the Sprott-Shaw Entrance Assessment (with a minimum score of 22/40 in language).
    Additional Admission Requirements:
      Applicants are required to attend an admissions interview, and have a successful mathematics entrance assessment (with a minimum composite score of 42/80). Applicants must also have excellent communication skills (composition); obtain a satisfactory certificate of health from a physician with a Physician's Waiver; submit a criminal record check (must be Public Safety & Solicitor General Schedule B); provide evidence of clear TB testing prior to acceptance (all must be done no more than three months before the start of the program); and provide evidence of up-to-date Immunizations (Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Polio, Chicken Pox, Tetanus, Diphtheria, Hepatitis B, Influenza and others as required by clinical sites).
