Electrical and electronics engineering technologists design, develop, and test various electronic or telecommunication systems. They supervise the building/testing of prototypes as well as and the installation, commission, and operation of electronic equipment. They may carry out research, and set up/operate test equipment to test, analyze, and evaluate the performance of various electronic systems, components, and assemblies.

How to become: Electrical and Electronics Engineering Technologists

To be a technologist, you need a two- to three-year college program in electrical/electronics engineering technology, computer engineering technology, telecommunications technology, or an equivalent area of study.

You may need certification by a provincial association, which is obtained after two years' supervised work experience.

There is mobility among related occupations such as technical sales, electronics service technicians, instrument technicians, and avionics technicians.

With experience, you may move up the ranks to be come a manager in engineering, production or operations.

Most recent entrants have a trade/vocational certificate or community college diploma, and almost 1 in 5 has an undergraduate university degree.
