Head Nurses and Supervisors

(NOC 3151)

These comments apply to the career group Nurse Supervisors and Registered Nurses, which includes Head Nurses and Supervisors.

Employment opportunities will come primarily from positions vacated by head nurses and supervisors who retire and, to a much lesser degree, from employment increase. A few opportunities may come from positions that are vacated by nurses and supervisors who are promoted into management positions. There is not much turnover in this occupation.

Head nurses and supervisors were more affected by the impact of the shift to ambulatory care than other health care occupations and will benefit less from expected growth in the next few years. This is why it is expected that their numbers will increase significantly over the next few years, but less radidly than most of the other occupations in health care and social services.

These opportunities will primarily be available to registered nurses who have at least a bachelor's degree in nursing.
