Areas of Expertise

Ranked as one of Australia’s top 10 tertiary institutions, La Trobe University offers a number of courses of particular interest to students from Canada, including excellent graduate teacher training programs in Primary and Secondary Education, as well as undergraduate and graduate opportunities in Tourism, Sport and Recreation Management. La Trobe University Bundoora Campus has a significant range of on campus accommodation, which can cater for up to 1,450 students in five collegiate style residences; Menzies College, Glenn College, Chisholm College, The University Lodge, and Graduate House. La Trobe University only provides co-ed accommodation, however special requirements may be accommodated.

Off Campus Housing

Students may choose from a variety of off-campus accommodations options such as renting a house, an apartment, or finding share accommodation. Rental accommodation can vary from AUD$100.00 to AUD$500.00 per week, depending on size, condition, location, and number of bedrooms. Students should expect to pay between AUD$100.00 and AUD$250.00 per week for a room in a shared house or apartment. La Trobe University offers a number of resources to assist students in finding off-campus accommodation. The Student Accommodation Service provides you with a range of essential information, which will greatly aid your search for accommodation and the services both internal and external to La Trobe, which will facilitate your safe, peaceful, and straightforward enjoyment of your accommodation and your time at within the University community (www.latrobe.edu.au/accommodation/bundoora).

Incoming Students

La Trobe offers a comprehensive welcome festival for new international students providing an orientation to the new academic environment and assisting with settling into life in Melbourne and Australia. La Trobe University offers extensive services to all students across each of our unique campuses. For example, on the Bundoora (Melbourne) Campus, services include on-campus accommodation, academic assistance, counselling and religious advisors, specialized advisory services for international students, and a wide range of student clubs and societies.

Career Planning

The Careers and Employment Web site at La Trobe University is a joint venture between the Course and Careers Services and the Student Employment Service (Bundoora). The aim is to provide students and graduates with a highly professional employment service to advance their career prospects. Careers and Employment currently offers enrolled students and recent graduates a range of services and resources in pursuing employment opportunities and developing career paths. Activities

The La Trobe University Student Union organizes a range of activities across La Trobe University including free entertainment such as bands, films and comedy, ceramic classes, leisure courses, a weekly market, radio station (Sub FM), and student theatre.

Clubs

The La Trobe University Student Representative Council (SRC), the central point for the Universities, Clubs, and Societies, with over 50 affiliated clubs and over 5,000 students involved. These clubs range from social, political, religious, cause based, and cultural. Clubs include Agricultural Science, Animal Rights, Biochemistry Society, BoysOwn, Breakfast Club, Business Students Association, Catalyst, Catholics @ LTU, Chill Out Club, CHOPS (country), Christian Union, Engineering Society, GirlsOwn, Geeks Inc. Information Technology

The Computer Study Hall has 64 IBM compatible PC’s and 15 Macintosh computers spread across two levels. Resources provided include basic MS Office Applications, free student E-mail (via Web), statistical analysis (SPSS), and some general software i.e. touch typing tutor, etc. It is available for use by all students. Students also have access to desktop computers and printers in the Student Computer Laboratory and Library.

Cultural

A range of culture student associations on campus such as Australian Union of Jewish Students, Botswana Students Association, Buddhist Society, Indian Sub-Continent Students Association, Islamic Society, Malaysian Students Association, Music @ La Trobe, and Turkish Students Association.

Special Services

The La Trobe University provides extensive services to students with special needs. The La Trobe Equity and Access Units promotes full and equal participation of all students and staff of La Trobe University and fosters an environment free of discrimination and harassment. The Equity and Access Unit provides assistance to students from the following backgrounds: socio-economically disadvantaged, non-English speaking with disabilities from rural and/or isolated areas, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, and women in non-traditional fields of study (www.latrobe.edu.au/equity).
