Profile

Meadowridge is an exemplary destination school, welcoming students and their families from throughout British Columbia and the world. Located in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, we are an independent, secular, International Baccalaureate World School offering a university preparatory education to students from Junior Kindergarten (age four) to Grade 12. With an emphasis on the development of well rounded individuals, our students learn to live well, with others and for others, in a just community. The foundation of that learning is the comfortable, safe, and supportive environment of the school. Our class sizes are small in order to provide more individual instruction and to permit the full participation of every student as a member of the class and of the intellectual community. We believe that the strong motivation, diligence, and respect for others shown by Meadowridge students is partly due to these learning conditions.

Areas of Expertise

We are one of the only schools in Canada accredited to offer both the IB Primary Years (PYP) and Middle Years (MYP) programs, and one of just three schools in the province to be granted membership in the Canadian Educational Standards Institute (CESI).

Career Planning

Meadowridge is a university preparatory school. To facilitate planning for post-secondary education, we support our students in a number of ways: university representatives from across Canada visit the school each year to give presentations; students meet regularly with the school's Post-Secondary Liaison Officer to discuss applications and entrance requirements; campus tours of local universities are arranged; and a resource area stocked with calendars, books, CD's, and scholarship applications is readily available to students. 100% of our graduates gain acceptance into post-secondary institutions, and our graduates frequently receive letters of early acceptance, guaranteed placement in residences, and earn thousands of dollars in scholarships.

Clubs

Meadowridge students at the PYP, MYP, and graduation program levels have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of clubs including: Origami, Mad Science, Horseback Riding, Swimming, Skateboarding, Gym Games, Computer Club, Rock Climbing, Chess, Band, Cross-Country Running, Public Speaking, Fly-Fishing, Drama, Art, Destination Imagination, Stream Keepers, Nature Drawing, Badminton, Writing, Needlecraft, Canoeing/Kayaking, Leadership Games, French Club, Ballet, Cross-Country, Duke of Edinburgh, Gryphon’s Council, Robotics, Computers, Chess, Marketing, Tech Crew, Strollers, Service, Yearbook, Investors’ Club, Strategic Games, Reach for the Top, Art, Drama, Math, Destination Imagination, Choir, Green Council, Ambassadors, Running Club, Spanish, Cooking, Medieval Fighting, and Photography.

Information Technology

To better integrate technology into lessons, all PYP and MYP classrooms, up to Grade 7, use the Microsoft Windows platform. To further improve technology integration, the school has implemented a laptop program from Grades 7 to 12. Currently, all students from Grades 8 to 12 are required to bring laptops to school. Moreover, all students from Grades 4 to 12 have access to a newly equipped lab of 15 Windows XP computers with Duo processors; and regardless of where students are in the school, they have wireless access to the Internet. Courses that require special software, such as Publishing and Yearbook, use the PC lab. Our music program has access to three iMac towers. These computers allow students to compose, record, and burn their own music. Our drama department also has six iMacs dedicated to editing and burning movies. To facilitate communication, all students in Grades 4 to 12, as well as staff are issued their own e-mail account that can be accessed through the Internet.

Affiliated Institutions

Meadowridge is accredited by the International Baccalaureate as an IB World School for both the Primary and Middle Years Programs. As a member of the Canadian Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) and the Independent Schools Association of BC (ISABC), Meadowridge is proud to adhere to the highest standards of ethics and financial reporting. We are also proud members of the Canadian Educational Standards Institute (CESI), which is the only internationally recognized school accreditation agency in Canada. Parents can be assured that a CESI school is rigorously reviewed on an on-going basis to ensure that it meets the highest standards of academic programming and operational integrity.

International Involvement

Currently, we offer international extended field trip opportunities, which range from ten days to four weeks in duration. It is our goal to have at least one such opportunity available every year for students in Grades 7-12. Every year, students in Grades 7 and 8 have the opportunity to travel to Japan over the Spring Break, while students who have completed French 10 may take advantage of a four credit French 11 course being offered in Montpelier, France. Every two years, a 10-day biology boat trip is offered in which participants will complete a hands-on course, earning two Biology 11 credits while they sail and study in the Baja Peninsula in Mexico. Moving forward, we hope to offer students 16 years or older the opportunity to volunteer in a developing country. In July 2009, there will be a service trip to Ecuador. We are also in the very early stages of planning a European trip for students in Grades 9 and 10. We will update parents on this effort as more details become available.

Campus Tour

Open Houses are held every Friday that school is in session from 9am to 11am.
