A postsecondary education is an investment in your future – and sometimes, fishing around for funding can be challenging. In fact, of the approximately $70 million in scholarship funding that is available to students in Canada, almost $7 million goes unclaimed.

The first thing to do is throw your line into the water and do a little research – so here’s how to make sure your education isn’t the one that got away.

Check out your school’s websiteMost institutions, including Humber College, offer a list of scholarships, bursaries and other financial aid options. Some are based on academic achievement, and others are based on financial need. Some are based on other criteria, like where you live or your community involvement.

Look around for external scholarships. There are lots of organizations that offer scholarships, often tied to a particular industry, demographic or community. Humber has a long list of external scholarships, bursaries and awards.

Check reputable sources. The Canadian government’s CanLearn website has a list of available scholarships and awards, as well as helpful tools for planning, saving and budgeting for your education. As well, the financial aid office of the postsecondary school you’d like to attend will also be able to give you helpful advice.

Chances are, if you cast your net wide and check out the options that are available, you’ll be better equipped to reel in a scholarship, bursary or other financial aid – and that can help you net a quality education.
