Living on campus

Edge Hill’s halls of residence are at the heart of a vibrant on-campus community, providing a safe environment in which new students can live, study, and socialise.

With all utility bills included, our accommodation offers excellent value for money. You will find everything you need is just a few minutes’ walk from your room.

You can find out more about halls of residence by reading our quick guide below.

What’s included in on campus rooms?

Rooms

All rooms include Wi-Fi access, a bed, a wardrobe, a desk and chair and a wastepaper bin. You are free to bring your own items to personalise your room. All utility bills are included in the room price.

Bed sheets, duvets, pillowcases, and towels are provided in all international student rooms, although you may wish to purchase your own when you arrive.

Kitchens

All students have a lockable cupboard in their kitchen and are expected to share refrigerator/other kitchen storage space with their housemates.

Crockery, cutlery, and cooking utensils are not provided.

Extra items can be purchased at a very reasonable price in the many shops within Ormskirk, such as Aldi, Morrisons, Lidl and Iceland. You can use the free bus to access Ormskirk easily or it’s a 15-minute walk.

How to book

Students accepted on an undergraduate degree programme can will be able to self-assign into your accommodation from this year. This means you can choose anywhere on campus with availability within the map. The Accomodation Team will be in touch with instructions.

You will be sent a link to use the portal from the accommodation team and will need to follow the three steps to complete your booking.

  1. Choose room
  2. Sign your licence agreement
  3. Pay £150 advanced residency fee

Paying your fees

A link to your contract will be emailed to you before you arrive. This requires e-signing before you collect your room keys. Please remember you are liable for your room for the length stated on the contract (usually 40 weeks) and you will not be able to exit unless there are exceptional circumstances. If for example you think your family may join you later, you should explore non-student off campus options.

You can pay your accommodation fees in one of three ways:

  • In advance (the full amount)
  • When you arrive on campus (the full amount)
  • When you arrive on campus (in instalments)

You may also need to pay a deposit in advance to secure your room, this amount will then be deducted from your overall accommodation fees.

Leaving your room

  1. Once your accommodation contract comes to an end and you want to leave your room, you will need to let the International student support officer know your departure date by emailing International student support.
  2. You then need to contact our Accommodation Team so a member of staff can check your room and arrange your deposit refund.
  3. On the day you leave, your room keys will need to be passed back to our Campus Support Team (where you originally collected them).

Need help with transport?

Study Abroad students and English Language students get free transportation to Manchester/Liverpool airport and local train stations in these cities on specific departures dates (which you will be informed of). To take advantage of the free transportation, please ensure you send the International Student Support Officer your departure details when requested.

Email International Student Support who will be happy to help you book a taxi.

Living off campus

If you prefer more independence, there is a variety of privately owned accommodation around the Ormskirk campus and surrounding the area, such as Liverpool, Southport and St Helens.

Our accommodation team can support you in finding off-campus accommodation. We can provide a register of local student properties to help you find the place for you.

Living off campus, you will still have access to all the University’s support services, IT and library resources, catering outlets, launderette, social areas, and activities.

Edge Hill runs a shuttle bus from Ormskirk bus station to campus which you may find useful if you are living in Ormskirk or commuting in by train. This bus is free if you show your Edge Hill Uni-Card.

Before you start looking for properties, calculate what you can afford to pay in rent. There is plenty of accommodation available, so there is no need to take the first house you look at. You should never take a house without viewing it first, you can ask any agents landlords to send a video tour, if you cannot see in person.

It is important to be aware that any contact you sign with a landlord is completely independent of Edge Hill University. Don’t feel pressured by a landlord to sign a contract and make sure you are happy with all the terms and conditions before you do sign. We also recommend you only sign a single tenancy and not a joint contract. This keeps you protected.

Any contract you sign with a private landlord is a legally binding document for a fixed term, which means you are financially liable for the rent for the whole term of the contract. So, make sure you’re certain you want the property before committing to it. If you would like further advice, please speak with the student union.

The Students’ Union Advice Centre provides a contract checking service so if you are unsure about anything at all, you can get in touch with the team by emailing [email protected]

Accommodation

Students participating in an Erasmus programme or studying a postgraduate course are not guaranteed on campus accommodation – if we have availability, you will be contacted by the Accommodation Team to apply but you should be looking for private accommodation as soon as possible.

Accommodation on and off campus for 1 semester students can be difficult to obtain so please leave plenty of time to arrange appropriate accommodation.
