Admission Requirements

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent including the following required course(s):
  • English – any Grade 12 (C) or (U), or equivalent
  • Mathematics – any Grade 12 (C) or (U)
Selection and Ranking

Applications are evaluated based on the published admission requirements. When the applicant provides proof of meeting the requirements, an offer of admission can be issued, provided space is available in the program.

Program Requirements
Transportation
  • Students are responsible for their own transportation in order to complete program requirements which may not be readily accessible by public transportation.
  • Program requirements could include co-ops, placements, volunteer requirements, practical labs, field projects, assignments, clinicals, or any other off-campus visits required as part of the program’s curriculum.
Computer/Technology Requirements

Students are responsible for ensuring that they have a Microsoft Windows 10 based desktop or laptop system that meets or exceeds the following general personal computer technology requirements:

  • A desktop or laptop system running on an updated Microsoft Windows 10 operating system.
  • Minimum 256GB SSD storage and 8 GB memory.
  • An integrated or peripheral video camera, microphone and speaker system.
  • Reliable internet connectivity with Broadband capabilities (a minimum download speed of 5 Mbps) is recommended.

Niagara College will not be able to provide support for systems different than the above specifications. Any provided software may not operate properly. Academic software for your courses (supported under the Microsoft Windows 10 operating system) will be made available for download and remote use. Access will also be provided to remote high performance computer labs if software downloads are not feasible.

Faculty

Michael Santoro

Michael Santoro

Coordinator/Professor

Michael Santoro is program coordinator and professor of Sport Management and Sport Administration at Niagara College.

Professor Santoro brings more than 39 years of related experience to the classroom, ranging from working in senior management positions in the private sector to teaching various sport management and business courses at Niagara College.

Professor Santoro’s sport-related work experience includes Athletic Director at Niagara College, Co-Chair 2018 PGA Canadian Open Pro-Am tournament, along with serving on several steering committees such as Toronto2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, Niagara College Foundation Golf Classic, 2013 CCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championship and the 2018 OCAA Men’s Basketball Championship.

Academically, Michael studied Business Administration and Sport Management while attending Southern New Hampshire University.

Chris Psutka

Chris Psutka

Professor

Chris Psutka is a full time professor of Sport Management and Sport Administration at Niagara College. Previously he served as the field placement coordinator where he provided mentorship and taught students the professionalism skills needed to succeed in the sport industry.

Academically, Chris received a Bachelor of Sport Management (Honours) from Brock University and a Master of Science in Sport Administration from University of Louisville. He has an extensive background in Sport for Development (SFD). Using the principles of Olympism and Sport For Development Theory, he has created and implemented SFD programs in Louisville, Kentucky, and Trinidad and Tobago. He also has a plethora of experience in intercollegiate athletics in both Canada and the United States.

Chris has a passion for sport, education and helping others, which he displays when working with his students. He uses the Problem-Based Learning pedagogy to facilitate learning, provide mentorship and guidance to future sport management professionals. Helping students maximize their academic and professional potential is his number one goal.

Mike Puillandre

Mike Puillandre

Professor

Mike Puillandre is a full-time professor of Sport Management and Sport Administration at Niagara College. He has been working and volunteering in the Canadian sport system since 2006 and his experience includes six years in post-secondary athletics and recreation, and three years of operational experience at an elite golf and hospitality facility.

Mike also has over 8 years football coaching experience at the high school, club, and provincial level. He was on the host committee for the 2016 IIHF Women’s World Hockey Championship, and has also worked with the 2017 North American Indigenous Games and 2018 Masters Indigenous Games.

Mike has an undergraduate degree in Sport Management and a Master of Arts degree in Applied Health Sciences (Sport Management) from Brock University. He studied sport partnership and sport program provision within the Ontario education system. He is dedicated to experiential and hands on learning, and believes in integrating workplace concepts into the academic classroom setting.

Shelley Merlo

Shelley Merlo BPE, CFEE

Professor

Shelley is a faculty member at Niagara College teaching in Sport Management and Sport Administration programs.

Shelley’s event industry experiences span over 25+ years, including working for the City of Hamilton, as Events Coordinator & Manager liaising with community event organizers, in addition coordinating major international events’ teams. She also worked for McMaster University Athletics Dept. on a team coordinating athletic fundraising activities and alumni events.

Recently, while on PD leave from college, Shelley worked with the City of Hamilton, as the Pan Am Cultural Coordinator. She led a team in the planning and implementation of the arts and culture program in the host community for soccer, during the TO2015 Pan AM Games. The program, sixteen (16) days of festivities & cultural events, was a team effort in collaboration with stakeholders, partners, past Niagara College graduates and students on field placements.

The rewarding part of her teaching includes advising event management students on their newly created Many Hands Project ‘live’ events for Niagara Community non- profits. The past students’ events were successfully held, created awareness and raised money for many Niagara Region non- profit organizations. 2017, celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Many Hands Project event. In 2009, she had the opportunity to assist with coordinating the College committee for the Royal Visit, of HRH Prince of Wales opening of the Wine Visitor + Education Centre, together with students’ assistance. Shelley also shares her industry experiences with students, in the academic environment demonstrating applied hands-on learning.

She is a graduate of McMaster University and holds a CFEE designation from IFEA. She is a past board member of Niagara Food Festival, Festival and Events Ontario Association and International Special Events Society/International Live Events Association- Toronto Chapter. Shelley is also the recipient of Tourism Hamilton Awards and a Hall of Fame Inductee with Festivals and Events Ontario.

Jenn Dey

Jenn Dey

Field Placement and
Program Support Officer

Jenn Dey is the Field Placement and Program Support Officer for the Sport Management Program at Niagara College. She coordinates field placements, provides mentorship and coaching to the students, preparing them with the skills to be successful in their placements and future careers in the sport industry.

Jenn has a diverse academic background including a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Sports Administration from Concordia University, where she was a member of the varsity women’s hockey team. She completed her internship with Hockey Canada, before moving to southern Ontario. Through a progressive career in Marketing with the parent company of Jack Astor’s restaurants, Jenn managed the sports partnerships with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Toronto Argos and the Toronto Rock.

In addition, Jenn has completed the Human Resources Management program at Niagara College. As a Manager of Talent Acquisition, Jenn has gained valuable experience working with students to identify work placement opportunities. Jenn is very passionate about life-long learning and providing exceptional experiences through mentoring and coaching for the students of Niagara College.
