• The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Internship Program
• 12 month fellowship in Temporomandibular Joint and Orthognathic Surgery (TJO) 

You will participate in all areas of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with increasing responsibilities for patient care. 

You will also have opportunities to teach current undergraduate students.  

Your study will involve:

• off-service rotations with 12 months of clinical rotations.
• patient care and outpatient clinic management with assistance in the operating room leading to responsibility for managing the operating rooms and developing surgical skills.
• you will eventually build your leadership role, coordinating the 36 operating rooms and the 42 clinic days a few days per month.
• opportunity to take part in external electives (amounting to a maximum of one month) in craniofacial surgery, head and neck surgery, reconstructive surgery, cleft lip and palate surgery, cosmetic surgery and maxillofacial trauma.

What this program enables you to do

The program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada and the Commission on Dental Accreditation in the United States through a reciprocal agreement.

Completion of this program will allow you to take the:

• National Dental Specialty Examination (the National Dental Examining Board of Canada)
• Fellowship Examination (Royal College of Dentists of Canada)
• Diplomate Examination (American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Internship Program

Important dates

• Applications open: 1 September

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) internship program is a one year program designed specifically for advanced training in OMFS with the goal towards eventual specializing.

You will shadow a junior resident with didactic participation at Sunnybrook and Mount Sinai hospitals and follow the Hospital Dental Residency curriculum.

Who this is for and eligibility

For Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) graduates who want to get some experience in oral and maxillofacial surgery before committing to a specialized program.

You must have:

• successfully completed the Doctor of Dental Surgery Program at the University of Toronto, or an equivalent recognized dental program.
• acquired your Educational Certificate or General Certificate of Registration (licence) to practice in Ontario from Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO).

How to apply for the OMFS Internship Program

Applications close November 1.

To apply, complete the online application form on the School of Graduate Studies website. 

This includes submitting*:

• Your current curriculum vitae (CV) or resume.
• A one- to two-page statement outlining your interest in the program. Include information on your background, interest, aptitude and ability for the internship program.
• Two letters of reference. Once you enter you referees’ information on the online application, they will receive an email with a link to upload their letter. If your referees are submitting hard copies of their reference letters, ask them to enclose the letter in a sealed envelope with a signature across the seal.
• Paying the non-refundable application service fee of $125 CAD.
• Arrange for your official dental school transcript to be sent to the Admissions Office electronically or in a sealed envelope directly from the issuing institution at the address listed below.

Registration and payment of fees

You must pay the registration fee of $1,400 (CAD) to register in the program.

You will receive a stipend of approximately $45,000.  

The University of Toronto fellowship in Temporomandibular Joint and Orthognathic Surgery (TJO)

A 12-month post-residency training program dedicated to clinical and scientific training in the management of Temporomandibular joint disorders and the treatment of Dentofacial Deformities.  

You will gain experience in the medical and non-surgical management of temporomandibular disorder and facial pain, working through Mount Sinai Hospital, alongside:

• OMF surgeons
• Orthodontists
• Periodontists
• Oral medicine and oral pathologists
• Neurologists; and
• Pain specialists.

As a TJO Fellow, you will be involved in in the clinical care of patients, including:

• initial patient assessment
• pre-operative planning
• surgical treatment 
• post-operative management of patients undergoing surgical treatment of temporomandibular disorders.

You will also work on two research projects (one in TMJ reconstruction and the other related to facial deformity correction or education), presenting these original research papers at a major Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery meeting, and publishing at least two original articles in relevant literature.

Through the Centre for Excellence in Temporomandibular Joint reconstructive surgery program at Mount Sinai hospital, you will be involved in;

• approx 30 alloplastic total joint replacements 
• autogenous joint replacements 
• other open joint procedures 
• a significant volume of Temporomandibular joint arthroscopy including single and multi-port arthroscopic surgery. 

Through the combined orthodontic and surgical clinic at the Faculty of Dentistry, you will:

• act as a mentor/clinician in orthognathic surgery
• supervise the surgical orthodontic management, treatment planning, Virtual Surgical Planning and the complete digital component of patients in the clinic about to undergo orthognathic surgery
• attend and participate in the role of surgeon or first assist in the over 200 Orthognathic Cases derived from private and Faculty patients which are performed in the teaching hospitals alongside staff and residents.

Who this is for and eligibility

You must have:

• successfully completed either:
  • the Doctor of Dental Surgery Program at the University of Toronto, or an equivalent recognized dental program
  • or a medical degree (DMD/MD)
• completed a residency program in oral and maxillofacial surgery 
• acquired your General Certificate of Registration (licence) to practice in Ontario from Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO) or medical license through the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario
• the appropriate visa or residency status to work in Ontario for 12 months.

How to apply for the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinical Fellowship

Important dates

• Deadline for application for the subsequent year is February 1^st.  This is 19 months prior to the start date of the Fellowship to allow for interviews, on site visit and visa permits (if applicable).  
• Fellowship runs: The program runs from August 1^st for 12 months ending on July 31^st the following year

4. A letter of intent describing your interest in the program and how you plan to use the training provided through the fellowship program. 
5. Arrange for your official specialty school transcript to be sent to the Admissions Office in a sealed envelope directly from the issuing institutions. 
6. Two letters of reference; one from department chair or program director, one from an additional mentor or colleague.
7. Register with the AACMFS Match.
8. If you graduated from a dental program not accredited by the CDA/CODA than you must write a TOEFL test and obtain a minimum overall score of 93 (IBT) or 580 (PBT).
