Hello, and welcome to this short overview of Middlesex University's MA media management program. I'm Dr. Adam Dalton, I'm the program leader for the MA media management. You can message me directly if you wish, there's my email address, don't worry, I'll show it again at the end.

If I'm out of the office, you can also message our director of programs, Anna Cherelamadou. Okay, so the MA media management, lots of people are like, when you say media, what do you mean? Is it social media?

Is it press and media? Is it digital media? Well, it's kind of all of that, really. Our MA media management focuses specifically on the creative industries and social media and digital marketing. Okay, we focus on the UK examples in that field, because the UK is what is a mature, well developed information society or knowledge economy.

Now you might think, well, what's an information society? Well, it's a society that has particular levels of information technology and infrastructure. Now, it's not just having lots of computers, it's about a population who have very high information literacy and access levels, private access levels.

Governments that are open and provide information that can be accessed freely, education resources that can be accessed freely. Now, obviously, there are organizations that control that digital content and, you know, want to charge people for access because of unique copyright, etc.

So. When there's more of a business model behind it then it's described as a knowledge economy more than an information society anyway. Middlesex University is of course based in London. London is an international creative city.

Now that's a city with well -developed creative industries that take advantage of media, media management, social media, but big tech as well. Broadcast companies and organizations, massive IT companies and so on.

A creative city is full of creative workers who work in particular styles and needs certain freedoms to work creatively. Anyway you'll learn more about that if you decide to join the MA. London is a media hub with a creative cluster so this is where you get certain types of organizations co -locating, coming to the same location, sharing technology audiences and workers, okay.

So London is a, is a media hub with creative clusters. It's also a tourist center we have, and as you know it's a very old capital city with cultural heritage industries which are a section of creative industries.

And consequently, of course, London has a very strong community of social media workers, digital marketing workers and DTC businesses which is direct to consumers. You may have heard of the fashion company called ASOS, A -S -O -S, that's a British director consumer business.

It's an online fashion business retailer and it's British, okay. Middlesex University works within this context. We have arts and creative industries, faculty and campus. We have partnerships, we're at the heart of this community.

Okay, on the MA media management, we have three terms. It's a face -to -face full -time course. You'll do a couple of modules in term one, couple of modules in term two, and then there's a term three, summer term major project where you do a piece of media research, okay.

The type of research though that if you were working as a media manager, you might do for a large, a medium to large organization. We have media management in practice module, audience engagement and data analytics.

This is particularly online audiences, obviously, but not exclusively. Project management, which is a key discipline in medium to large organizations, media management organizations. I don't know if you know, but the first project management organization, methodology sigma six or six sigma came out of it and work breakdown structures and gantts that came out of the media management sector.

And on ours, we look at a methodology known as Kanban or agile or scrum. Okay. And you'll also do research skills. Now, this is market research skills, but also academic research skills, which do complement each other.

Do you understand that there is both theory and practice in this MA because it is an academic qualification, albeit it's one that prepares you for the world of work and practice. So we have both theory and practice on the MA.

And then digital marketing for the creative industries, major project, as I say, you're working more on your own with a supervisor there where you're undertaking a particular piece of research. Okay.

Why middle sex? Well, as I say, the location helps, right? We have partnerships with industry and we bring in guest speakers from top UK companies and organisations to give you guest lectures on the MA.

We also try and get you work placements with top UK companies in the area of media management and we have a unit, a team called MDXWorks Middlesex Employability Service that will help you find a work placement while you're on the MA and Middlesex University has a very good track record in securing jobs for its alumni once they finish the MA with companies in publishing, theatre and film, journalism, copywriting, advertising, gaming, social media management and so on.

We have a campus, beautiful campus in the suburb known as Hendon on the top of a hill, beautiful beautiful and green, some clean air up there actually and yeah we have world -class media facilities and a thriving student community and outstanding student support services.

We have a wonderful library, as I say media services, a newsroom and so on, film equipment, film studios, all of that but we're also interested in supporting our students financially in terms of their well -being and in terms of their extra learning needs.

So our libraries team has an academic support team so you know if you ever are finding the MA a bit difficult and you need help with something we have a team to help you outside of the classroom as well.

Okay you can apply for the MA online but if you do have questions that you'd like answered in advance or whatever just let me know okay bye -bye.

Our degree is ideal in preparing graduates for a management career in the media and related industries.

About your course

What will you gain? In addition to an in-depth understanding of media management, you’ll learn digital and media marketing skills vital to engage with the current media landscape. You’ll enhance your numeracy and foundational data analytics skills, especially within media consumption and audience measurement metrics. Throughout your degree, you’ll acquire a broad range of work-related skills, from organisational and planning skills, to budgeting, timetabling, the reporting of findings and report-writing. This course encourages independent learning and research through the self-management of the major final project. Furthermore, you’ll have plenty of opportunities during your studies to demonstrate team-work, problem-solving and leadership skills and gain effective communication in written, verbal and visual forms, including negotiation and presentation skills.

The module provides an overview of the course and addresses the relationships between media management, policy and economics, content production and distribution, and society. You'll consider the drivers for change within media and creative industries and the context for managerial decision-making.

Choosing to do a postgraduate degree means that you will be interested and engaged in gaining research skills that enable you to embark on a process of knowledge-making, self-discovery and self-motivation. Through hands-on assignments, you will gain project management skills beneficial for your future career, such as defining, planning and costing projects, which consequently will inform the development of the final major project proposal.

The module addresses the reconfigured relationship between media and creative industries and their audiences. Key challenges and issues will be evaluated in the context of big data, small data, AI, and the ‘affective turn’ in audience research approaches. This will equip you with an understanding of media engagement and consumption, the changing role of audiences, participatory cultures, and ways of exploring audiences through digital methods.

This module aims to explore digital marketing looking at the challenges and opportunities the new technologies and concepts such as social media, search engines, mobile advertising and user generated content bring to creative industries at international level. You'll be equipped with knowledge and practical skills in the virtual market place and be prepared to manage and apply new digital marketing models, social media and branding strategies.

During this module, you'll develop a research-based, practically-oriented final project and demonstrate critical and independent thinking. This should draw on topics covered during the MA, addressing the specificities, challenges, innovations and opportunities within media management and the creative industries more broadly, and explore more forensically a subject identified as key to career development.
