Art History (M.A.)

Program Description

The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Art History (Thesis) offered by the Department of Art History & Communications in the Faculty of Arts is a research-intensive program that emphasizes interactive and tailored learning opportunities. The program's objective is to equip students with skills in original thinking, critical reading, and research dissemination to either continue their studies or pursue professional opportunities.

The program may also be taken as the Gender and Women's Studies option where students coursework focusing on gender and women's studies, and issues in feminist research and methods. The final thesis must be on a topic centrally relating to issues of gender and/or women's studies.

Unique Program Features

  • Students benefit from access to Redpath Museum, the McCord Museum of Canadian History (houses the McGill University Archives), the archives and exhibits of the Canadian Centre for Architecture and the Bibliothèque et Archives Nationales de Québec also offer grants and research opportunities;
  • The Department has close relationships with the three other major universities in Montreal, which  are Concordia University, Université de Montréal, and Université de Québec à Montréal. This means students have access to a broad network of additional courses, lectures, and colleagues across the city;
  • Faculty members specialize in topic areas such as ancient, medieval Renaissance; the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries; Contemporary, Canadian, East Asian, and architectural history; new media, print culture, gender and sexuality, race and representation, art historical methodologies, notably Feminism, Postcolonialism, and Queer Theory.

University-Level Admission Requirements

  • An eligible Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA out of a possible 4.0 GPA
  • English-language proficiency
