Bachelor of Paramedicine

The Bachelor of Paramedicine is a three-year degree offered full-time on-campus at the Gold Coast. Intensive teaching periods and online course content will be available.

The Bachelor of Paramedicine will run over three trimesters in Years 1 and 2; Trimester 1 and Trimester 2 only in Year 3; and students will be able to graduate at the end of Year 3.

As a full-time student, you will generally attend 15-20 hours of scheduled classes per week throughout the trimester.

Managing study interruptions

Leave of Absence
Students will require approval from the Program Director, Bachelor of Paramedicine or nominee to take a leave of absence.

Readmission
A student who has discontinued enrolment in the Bachelor of Paramedicine program and who is not on an approved leave of absence is required to seek approval for readmission to the program from the Program Director, Bachelor of Paramedicine or nominee. Readmission to the Bachelor of Paramedicine program is not guaranteed and subject to availability of clinical placements.

Student Income Support

To be classed as a full-time student, you are required to enrol in a minimum number of credit points each standard study period. The minimum credit points for full-time enrolment in this program is 30 credit points.

Trimester 1 and Trimester 2 are deemed standard study periods. As Trimester 3 is a non-standard study period, continuing students moving from one year to the next will not be required to study during this trimester to be eligible for student income support.

Domestic students who commence in Trimester 3 may be eligible for student income support from the onset of study provided they are enrolled full-time in this study period.

Work-integrated learning activities (professional placements) integrate theoretical learning with its application in the workplace. The inclusion of work-integrated learning activities in the degree program demonstrates Griffith's commitment to preparing its graduates for success in their working life.

In this program, you will spend time in a variety of clinical situations undertaking unpaid placements at various locations. This will occur throughout each year with the ambulance placements occurring in Trimester 3 of Year 1, Year 2 and Trimester 1 of Year 3.

Compulsory clinical placements begin in Year 1 and are included in all three years of the program. Students will need to be available for these placements as they are part of the program. For the ambulance placements, these will be four weeks full-time in Years 1 and 2 and six weeks in Year 3. The ambulance placements encompass shift work that could include day, afternoon, night and weekend shifts. Students must complete all of the mandatory requirements, as outlined on the Health Placement Support Hub Paramedicine website, in order to continue in the program. Students who do not fulfil these mandatory requirements will be required to exit the program and/or transfer to an alternative program.

Graduates of this degree will be able to apply for employment as a graduate level paramedic within Australia (following registration) and a number of other countries. Other careers areas may also include the military, mining and other commercial paramedic opportunities.

The Bachelor of Paramedicine program is approved by the Paramedicine Board of Australia and accredited by the Paramedicine Accreditation Committee.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Paramedicine program will be eligible to apply for registration as a Paramedic with the Paramedicine Board of Australia via the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) subject to meeting any additional requirements that may be stipulated by the Paramedicine Board of Australia. As these requirements may change from time to time, students should contact AHPRA to confirm registration requirements.

Graduates will also be eligible to become a member of the Australasian College of Paramedicine and/or the Australasian College of Paramedic Practitioners.

There are placements associated with this program and before undertaking professional experience placements, all students in this program are required to have completed the following by the end of their first trimester of study:

• Licenses and Certificates
• Online Training
• Health Placement Requirements

You will receive excellent training for entry into the Doctor of Medicine (5099). You will develop knowledge and skills in paramedicine and clinical sciences and understand how they can be applied to medicine, research and healthcare services.
