Occupational Safety, Health & Wellbeing Masters - MSc/PgD/PgC

(OSH7017) WORKER SAFETY, HEALTH AND WELLBEING (20 CREDITS):
The aim of the module is to evaluate the positive and negative influences the workplace has on the safety and health of workers and evaluate the evidence for creating an all-inclusive approach to improving safety, health and wellbeing at work.

(FST7008) RISK PERCEPTION, ASSESSMENT & COMMUNICATION (20 CREDITS):

The aim of the module is to enable the student to evaluate the impact a wide range of factors including psychological and psychosocial influences have on the perception, assessment and communication of risk. The module will include hazard identification, risk assessment, mitigation factors and their general impact on safety, health and wellbeing.

(SHS7000) APPLIED RESEARCH METHODS AND DESIGN (20 CREDITS):

The aim of the module is to enable students to develop their research skills in order to apply principles of evidence-based practice, and design and carry out robust research projects.

(OSH7018) DEVELOPING INTERVENTIONS & INFLUENCING BEHAVIOUR (20 CREDITS):
The aim of this module is to enable students to compare and contrast approaches to influencing worker behaviour and construct a strategic response and multidisciplinary approach to improving safety, health and wellbeing in the workplace.

(OSH7012) MEASURING SAFETY, HEALTH AND WELLBEING PERFORMANCE (20 CREDITS):

The aim of the module is to enable the student to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of health, safety and wellbeing programmes through the appraisal of individual and organisational performance outcomes.

(OSH7015) WORKER ENGAGEMENT AND WELLBEING (20 CREDITS):

The aim of this module is to enable students to develop strategies for improving worker engagement and wellbeing and to critically evaluate their influence on organisational outcomes.

(OSH7016) RESEARCH PROJECT (60 CREDITS):

The aim of the module is to enable students to design, plan, undertake and present research in a relevant study area, demonstrating a systematic understanding and critical awareness of their discipline and area of professional practice.

Module Structure
Please note, the order the modules depends upon the route of study, i.e. part-time, full-time or distance learning, and the intake on to the programme, i.e. September or January.

The taught programme is designed to be studied across two terms*. The order and number of modules studied at one time depends upon the time of intake.  September students start with Term 1 modules and January students with Term 2 modules.  Breaks are at Easter, summer and Christmas.  

Lectures are weekly, normally on a Tuesday or Thursday.

*Depending on the academic calendar lectures can extend in to term 3, ending in May. 

Learning and teaching overview 

The teaching and learning strategy for the programme places a strong emphasis on application of theoretical frameworks to real problems and situations. Teaching focus on case studies, exercises and scenarios reflecting contemporary occupational safety, health and wellbeing issues, often located within students own professional experience and, if applicable, working environment. 

Academic support upon starting the programme or modules

Prior to starting lectures students complete a series of academic skills development sessions. Designed to help develop academic skills and improve confidence and ability to study at Masters Level, the sessions are an invaluable tool for both those returning to academia and those who have entered via the professional experience route. The sessions culminate in the completion of a practice essay where each student is provided with personal feedback by a personal tutor. 

Personal Tutors 

All students are provided with a personal tutor who will help support and guide them through their learning experience. 

Moodle

Students are able to gain access to a range of learning and teaching resources specific to the modules and programme via Moodle, the University virtual learning environment. 

Lectures and online learning sessions

Lectures and on-line learning sessions provide an opportunity to explore key theories and concepts, debate and reflect on professional practice and facilitate further study. The programme delivery includes opportunities for debate and discussion, either in face to face lectures or through live MS Teams sessions and webinars.  

Study Hours 

Typically for a 20 credit module students will be required to undertake the equivalent of 36 hours taught or directed online study supplemented by a recommended 164 hours of self-directed study.

Work Based Learning

Students are encouraged to undertake and complete work based projects as part of several module assessments. For those wishing to explore work placement opportunities we have a Placement Office who work with students to potentially obtain work experience whilst studying on the programme. 

Staff 

The academic team have a wealth of experience in occupational, environmental and public health disciplines. In addition to being Chartered members of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health or Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, several of the team have been nominated and received teaching awards. If you are interested in developing your professional skills a number of modules can be taken as individual CPD modules. Modules can be studied as both credit bearing modules, which require submission of assignments, and none credit bearing, which do not require assignments to be completed. A certificate of attendance will be issued for modules taken as none credit bearing.

To reflect the applied nature of study, the programme contains no unseen written examinations. Instead, assessments include:

Written assessments - such as reports, essays, case studies and an academic poster 

Oral assessments - Oral presentation and professional viva 

Assessment tasks encourage students to select specific topics of study that are relevant to them and their practice.

 Students are provided with formative feedback opportunities and an opportunity to discuss assessment requirements with the lecturer and their peers throughout the modules.

Improved career potential 

The IOSH salary survey (2016) indicates that the average salary for a Health and Safety professional with a master's degree qualification is £50,000. 

Many Graduates are now in Senior Management and Director Level positions. Other Graduates have gone on to undertake a PhD and to teach, either in Cardiff Met or other universities across the world. 

IOSH membership 

This programme has been accredited by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). Enrolled students can access IOSH Student Membership for the duration of their studies and, on successful completion, they will meet the academic requirements for Graduate (Grad IOSH) membership. Graduate membership is the gateway to Chartered status. As IOSH is the only organisation in the world that offers Chartered membership to health and safety practitioners, this can help you achieve the highest professional standards and gain international recognition.

 1. Following the implementation of the IOSH Membership Review during 2021, IOSH conditions of membership require evidence of experience which will be required in addition to any accredited qualification. Graduate (Grad IOSH) membership will change its title to Certified member. 

2. IOSH retain the right to change its membership standards, recognition and grade entry requirements.

• Potential students are normally expected to have a degree in a discipline relating to occupational safety and health.
• However, candidates with other relevant qualifications or experience in occupational safety and health, or an allied profession, will be considered.
  
  

Recognition of Prior Learning:
Where applicable candidates may apply for exemption from modules through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. This may include credit transfer from another level 7 programme, recognition of prior credited learning and recognition of prior experiential learning'.

English Language Requirements

Taught programme
 For candidates whose first language is not English, such candidates must normally be able to demonstrate on entry English Language proficiency at or equivalent to an IELTS score of at least 6.0 with no element lower than 5.5. Pre-sessional English courses are available through Cardiff Metropolitan University for those who do not initially meet the requirement.

 • Full-time fees (UK and international fees) - Unless otherwise stated the fee amount is the total cost of the entire programme

 • Part-time fees - Are based upon the number of credits studied per academic year. Generally we find most students will complete 60 credits in year 1 and 60 credits in year 2 (PgC & PgD), and a 60 credit research project in year 3 (MSc).
