Overview

Do you have an interest in healthcare, and want to be part of the fast-growing area of health services professionals?

Most often, the health services professional is the first person to interact with patients and clients. As a graduate of the Office Administration – Health Services program, you will acquire the knowledge and specialized skills to be an integrated member and provide administrative support to the healthcare team.

Program Outcomes Term: 1244
  1. conduct oneself professionally and adhere to relevant legislation, standards and codes of ethics.

  2. manage the scheduling, coordination and organization of administrative tasks and workflow within specific deadlines and according to set priorities.

  3. coordinate the collection, analysis, distribution and response to communications in the workplace to facilitate the flow of information.

  4. operate and provide support to others related to the use of office equipment and technologies.

  5. evaluate, establish and administer health records management systems to ensure confidential, secure, accessible and organized electronic and paper records*

  6. produce financial and client billing records for health services by compiling relevant information and using accounting software.

  8. use interpersonal and client service skills to respond to the diverse needs of clients, their family members and the health care team.

Admission Requirements

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent including the following required course(s):
  • English – any Grade 12 (C) or (U), or equivalent
Recommended Courses and/or Skills:

These courses and skills may help you succeed academically in this program, but they are not required for admission.

  • Mathematics – any Grade 11 (C), (U), or (M)
  • Biology – Grade 11 (C) or (U) or Grade 12 (U)
Selection and Ranking

Applications are evaluated based on the published admission requirements. When the applicant provides proof of meeting the requirements, an offer of admission can be issued, provided space is available in the program.

Program Requirements
Criminal Record Check
  • A Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (CRC-VSS) which is less than 6 months old is required.
  • Many employers have instituted a CRC with vulnerable sector screening as a requirement for appropriate field placements.
  • The CRC-VSS must be provided to the Placement Agency on the first day of clinical placement.
  • Students will be required to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) in order to be cleared for placement/clinical. Please note, in order to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS), students must be 18 years of age or older. If a student is not 18 years of age or older at the start of this program, they will experience delays in progression through the program.

  • Many employers have instituted a CRC with vulnerable sector screening as a requirement for appropriate field placements.

Communicable Disease Surveillance
  • The confidential Communicable Disease Surveillance (CDS) Form must be completed and submitted to Student Health Services prior to the start of Term 3.
  • Please view the CDS Form and Checklist for health requirements at niagaracollege.ca/cdsform/.
  • The CDS form must completed 1 month prior to the start of the placement term or a placement will be denied.
Transportation
  • Students are responsible for their own transportation in order to complete program requirements which may not be readily accessible by public transportation.
  • Program requirements could include co-ops, placements, volunteer requirements, practical labs, field projects, assignments, clinicals, or any other off-campus visits required as part of the program’s curriculum.
Computer/Technology Requirements

Students are responsible for ensuring that they have a Microsoft Windows 10 based desktop or laptop system that meets or exceeds the following general personal computer technology requirements:

  • A desktop or laptop system running on an updated Microsoft Windows 10 operating system.
  • Minimum 256GB SSD storage and 8 GB memory.
  • An integrated or peripheral video camera, microphone and speaker system.
  • Reliable internet connectivity with Broadband capabilities (a minimum download speed of 5 Mbps) is recommended.

Niagara College will not be able to provide support for systems different than the above specifications. Any provided software may not operate properly. Academic software for your courses (supported under the Microsoft Windows 10 operating system) will be made available for download and remote use. Access will also be provided to remote high performance computer labs if software downloads are not feasible.

Note: There is no support for Chromebooks or Apple products for this program. (learn more)

Field Placement

The Office Administration – Health Services program has a field placement component. This partnership with the medical community provides students with an exciting opportunity to apply their developing skills in a practical office environment. The field placement allows students to put into practice the curriculum they’ve learned in the classroom to the workplace setting. This is a great opportunity for our students and partners to work together and learn from each other.
