This master’s programme will inform your educational practice.

As part of this course, you’ll:

  • Take a critical and reflective approach to diverse issues in education, such as culture, race, gender and class
  • Understand and challenge the importance of relevant theories, paradigms and concepts 
  • Develop and articulate your own views on education, informed by a critical evaluation of relevant theoretical and practical perspectives
  • Adopt an autonomous approach to your learning and continuing professional development
  • Apply theoretical debates to critically evaluate professional practices and vocational contexts
  • Explore and critique educational theory, research, policy and practice
  • Select and apply appropriate research techniques and methodologies to complete a major piece of independent research
  • Practise making sound judgments and communicating or presenting your conclusions competently

Teaching expertise
Our teaching team includes experts across a broad variety of topics. You’ll learn from staff with experience across many aspects of education, from educational philosophy to child development and language acquisition to special needs. The team also includes specialists in professional and cultural identity in education, leadership, and management in education.

Shared experiences
You’ll study alongside students from a range of different backgrounds and educational environments. This will give you the opportunity to share your experiences and learn from each other's teaching methods.

Teaching and learning
The distance learning mode of this course is delivered during weekend and twilight sessions during the week. On-campus delivery is taught through weekday, twilight sessions and some weekend sessions. Regardless of delivery mode, your teaching will comprise small group tutorials, seminars and lectures. You’ll have opportunities to participate in peer-led discussions and presentations, and access to additional support on our Virtual Learning Environment. Your learning will be enhanced by visiting speakers who will share their experiences of working in the educational sector.

Study support
You’ll receive supportive feedback from your course team, who will provide guidance on academic writing and referencing. Whether you’re in employment, studying full or part-time or have caring responsibilities, this course has been designed flexibly to suit your needs.
