Bachelor of Science

The St. Mary’s University Bachelor of Science with a major in Biology is unique in Alberta, being embedded in a liberal arts context with a strong focus on experiential learning. You will acquire deep biological knowledge and develop transferable skills needed for tomorrow’s economy.

This program offers students opportunities not found at larger institutions. Its small class size and intimate environment increase a sense of community and allow you and your professors the chance to get to know each other. Through the many real-world, hands-on experiences, you’ll learn about the world and develop the skills needed to take on its challenges. Knowledge of biology

Build knowledge and understanding of general biology, including a basic knowledge of the biological molecules, the cell, genetics, regulation, structure/function, interaction with the environment and evolution.

Research skills

Conduct and design experiments to test a hypothesis, gather evidence and analyze data using statistical methods to test predicted outcomes, learn field and laboratory technologies and techniques and inspect specimens.

Critical thinking skills

Learn to collect and interpret data, examine and critically analyze biological problems and questions, consider ideas and information to predict outcomes and research, and develop understanding from various scientific literature sources.

Communication skills

Develop your skills by researching, analyzing, and developing your understanding of various scientific literature sources, organizing, and conveying a comprehensive scientific argument, communicating information on biological phenomena and writing literature reviews and scientific reports.

Career Pathways

A Bachelor of Science in Biology provides a strong foundation for a diversity of careers. For some, it is an especially strong background for careers in medicine and medical research, nursing, dentistry and other health sciences, but there are plenty of biology degree jobs that don’t involve going anywhere near a stethoscope or drawing up patient charts, including lab-based research, direct involvement in policy or even the sale of new prescription drugs.

Beside is a sample of jobs that find this degree valuable. Note that this is not an exhaustive list and some occupations require further education and experience.

Capstone

A key component of the BSc in Biology degree is the capstone project. Each student carries out an independent research project under the guidance of a faculty member. These capstone projects provide students with a valuable foundation for future work in graduate school or in industry and can lead to publication or presentation at local and international conferences. Students think critically and solve challenging problems, particularly in the areas of experimental design and data analysis. In addition, students hone their skills in written/oral communication and public speaking, and increase the quality of their work via collaboration with their peers and instructors. This year, our students worked on projects related to tardigrades, bird populations, and the relationship between ants and invasive weeds.

Each year, StMU’s biology students present their work in a poster conference at the end of the winter semester where friends, family and members of the community are welcome to attend.
