Overview

McGill’s School of Social Work prepares you to make a difference in Montreal, across Canada and around the world. You will learn about research, practice and policy in social work, with a focus on social justice and issues facing vulnerable and disadvantaged people.  

This program will help you develop:  

  • Social work knowledge pertaining to history, theory, research, practice, and policy 
  • Professional skills applicable to work with individuals, families, and groups in communities and organizations;  
  • Understanding of the factors, processes, and forces that form and govern social policy in Canada, and skills to work towards policy improvement and change;  
  • Awareness of various dimensions of diversity and how they intersect; 
  • A sense of responsibility that accompanies acts of intervention, and;  
  • A commitment to ethical social work practice

Student Experience

The McGill School of Social Work is also a member of the International Association of Schools of Social Work (IASSW) and the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE). The program is accredited by the CASWE.  

Starting in your second year, you will benefit from a Field Placement that will provide you with an opportunity to apply theories and skills in a practical setting. Under the supervision of the McGill BSW Field Placement Coordinator and a qualified supervisor from a social services agency, department, or organization, you get to gain practical experience while working with diverse communities and populations.
