Educational Studies (PhD)
This PhD is a research-oriented program for students interested in any areas offered in the department, including the specializations below. It is designed to prepare educational leaders who demonstrate creative and critical scholarship, proficiency in a broad area of learning and high scholarly attainment.
Other areas include continuing professional education, critical multiliteracies, equity in education, Indigenous education, international education, culture and education in schools, community and families.
You will consider the expertise of faculty members in the area and with your supervisor to develop an individualized program of study culminating in a substantial research contribution to the field.
You can specialize in one of the following areas:
- art education
- curriculum studies
- drama education
- early childhood education
- educational technology
- language and literacy
- mathematics and science education
- music education
- social, cultural and foundational studies

Outcomes
Students in this program will:
- Understand the depth and breadth of educational research, and become familiar with diverse research paradigms
- Critically engage with educational research, being able to read and engage with research studies
- Understand ontology (the nature of being) and epistemology (philosophical study of the nature, origin, and limits of human knowledge) and axiology (study of value)
- understand and apply ethical principles to research
- align theoretical constructs to methodologies
- focus on a specific area of focus and conduct research
- share research findings in diverse ways to diverse audiences

PhD students must have a faculty member who serves as their academic supervisor. When you apply:
- you must list a potential supervisor on your application
- this faculty member must agree to be your supervisor and recommend your admission
- include an email from your supervisor with your application
